Now that I’ve spotted some old wooden tennis racquets, they seem to be popping up everywhere. Some commenters have told me that they’ve seen wooden racquets in their local thrift shops!

I stopped by a thrift shop, affectionately known as “Saks North Avenue” this morning, en route to a tag sale. I just checked the huge hamper that houses discarded sporting equipment and found a whole trove of old wooden racquets.racquets 4I found Chris Evert and JC Higgins (1908-1964)racquets 5and Björn Borg. racquets 6And you can see the price on this lovely 1900’s vintage wooden racquet… a whopping $2.90!

  1. I had a 1969 "Doris Hart" that I thought would be priceless. I donated it a couple of years ago. Jr. High tennis lessons were, well..awkward.

  4. Hi Meg, this OKL madness is contagious ... I really have to wonder if any perusers have confronted them and/or their overzealous " Stylemakers". This would be a great segment for the late night talk show hosts!
OMG, I need to take an anti anxiety pill as all of this just gets me riled up!! Perhaps we can compare some of the good deals at another time. (yes, I'm guilty and have purchased some)
LOL behave yourself out there today Meg and happy hunting!

  6. Hi Meg, I love the rackets. Re. OKL--people will buy what they will buy for whatever reason. Insecure people buy for name recognition, people with a great eye and great taste buy without needing the name/brand thing.
Have a wonderful Sunday!! It is raining here; so I'm not going to the shop and am taking a rare day off!! Thank you for rain! Be well. Mary

  9. Um... if people will buy this stuff for huge amounts of money, why don't YOU start a website selling it for huge amounts of money, since you are scarfing it up for cheap? Then you can post pictures of YOUR mansion in Scotland! And, of course, invite us all for tea and tennis played with vintage racquets. 8-)

  10. The first time I tried to learn tennis I had to use one of these wooden rackets. Unfortunately it was the early 90's when everyone else had brand new rackets and I was in middle school so totally embarrassed as well as weighed down by the wood. #traumatized

Though I bet my mom still has those rackets in her basement. I should dig them out!
