For some strange reason, I’ve been seeing (and picking up) a lot of books about Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis at Book Thing recently. Of course, I said the same thing almost two years ago!Today was no different, with the addition of another book, Lester David’s Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis: A Portrait of Her Private Years. I also picked up Donald Spoto’s Jacqueline: A Life, the other week. One of the books I’ve already read is Just Jackie: Her Private Years by Kennedy family biographer Edward Klein. It’s a lot of inside stories about her life and was very good. Another book that I recently found – I initially bought a copy, and then about two weeks later, I found a copy at Book Thing – is Happy Times, Lee Radziwill’s autobiography, published by Assouline. This book is especially fascinating for design lovers, as she has numerous images of the houses where she lived, including an amazing “cottage” outside of London. While I was looking for links to these books, I stumbled across this website, devoted to all things Kennedy, by someone living in Italy. He’s got a bibliography of dozens of books about the Kennedy family, here.
Here are some other articles I’ve written about JBKO: Kennedy Weddings. Mrs. Kennedy Goes Abroad. Kennedy Style. More Kennedy Couture. I am getting quite a collection of books! If you’re interested in my extra copy of Happy Times, just e-mail me.
By the way, which is your favourite of these pictures of JBKO?
First things first...LOVE the header, as always.
ReplyDeleteLove all the Jackie pics but I love the one on the jacket of the Edward Klein book because she looks so natural and carefree.
I've unearthed all 30+ boxes of my books from storage. I'll definitely be making a deposit at The Book Thing this spring. I need the tax deduction!
Meg, very interesting. I like seeing her grace and beauty as she matured...The Private Years, also Spotos a Life as she is relaxing and pensive. That said yes, seeing a woman in her natural beauty is refreshing!
ReplyDeleteAn iconic woman . . . a classic in grace and beauty. What a photo; the last one. So young and by andy warhol?? Happy New Year. cheers, -susan
ReplyDeleteHuge fan of Lee Radziwill, so Happy Times is a must!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year's Meg! I have only one book of JBKO, so I envy your collection! I'll live vicariously through you :)
ReplyDeleteI love the photo of her on the cover of A Life, but I love them all. What a collection of an icon.
ReplyDeleteCurses!! I knew I should have gone this past weekend. I too Have an extensive JBKO library. She had it all. I admire her so.
ReplyDeleteMeg, I love reading your blog. Have a Hapy New Year!
Anon... send me an e-mail, and i will give you the books when I am finished with them.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year! One of my resolutions is to get going on my project with the beautiful Paris map. Thanks again for making the link available.
ReplyDeleteLove this post and all things Jackie O. Have you ever read Carole Radziwill's book, "What Remains?" It is really good and lead me to read "Happy Times" which I also loved. What a spirit!
Oh, and my vote goes to the Spoto cover. I think that is a breath taking picture.
Anne... I haven't read "What Remains". I know it's going to be heart-breaking, and I've got to be in the right mood.
ReplyDeleteThe first photo is my favorite Meg. I think the early years seemed to show her with a great exuberance. What a magnificent life she led, but not sure my heart could withstand the heartbreak that she and the Kennedy's have had to endure. She will always be one of my favorite women of my lifetime. They don't really make women such as her anymore. Thanks for this great post Meg.
ReplyDeleteI go back to books about her all of the time, looking for some new nugget. It's tragic that both sisters lost their sons a month apart. I remember reading once that Jackie and her secretary, Nancy Tuckerman, sitting in front of her fireplace, burning her old correspondence--with glee. She's not the first to do that. Interesting how people wish to leave gaps in history.
ReplyDeleteThe "Just Jackie" cover is very nice. But I'd like to think of everyday life looking like Spoto's dust jacket photo.
ReplyDeletei think i really like the very last one..super personal.
ReplyDeleteshe is so fabulous isnt she?
