Oh, Sandy!

It’s almost hard to take a hurricane named Sandy seriously, but take it seriously we must. imageHere in the mid-Atlantic we get all types of weather and other natural phenomenon, like blizzards, earthquakes, extreme heat and derechos. This incoming storm is being compared to “The Perfect Storm” in 1981, about which a book was written and a movie was made.

Hurricane Sandy is coming up from the Caribbean and moving north along the coast. Because of the counter-clockwise motion of hurricanes, they usually spin out to sea, but there’s a high pressure system off the coast pushing it back. Added to that is a cold front heading down from Canada, which will drop the temperatures. Purple is storm warnings, and bright green is heavy coastal flooding.

Our forecast is thus: image

I have a spring that runs under my house and when we get heavy rains, the groundwater increases the flow of the stream. I have a sump pump, and my biggest worry is that the power will go out and my basement will flood. I’ve taken everything up, so that nothing’s on the floor. I tried to get a battery back-up, but that was impossible.

I’ve shopped for food and water for Connor and me, (plus booze, loo roll, candles and snacks).image I’ve plugged in all of the computers, cell phones, MP3 players, etc.

Now all that’s left is to wait and watch, and of course, hope for the best.

  6. Waiting with you down here in Virginia Beach and hoping for "just" a northeaster. Pop that popcorn and enjoy it now with Conner. That graphic is just the thing. Thanks.

  7. Miss Meggie:

Will check in on you during the storm to see how you're doing. Sorry to see that you all might get 12 inches of rain, sith the possibility of more. We can get up to 6", with the possibility of more, but I'm nervous about that amount, and it's only half of what you're expecting. Hugs to you!

    Miss M.A.

Woke up at 6:50, big headache, took second pill.

This does not bode well. My head is a barometer.

    You two be safe.

I just hope that all we have all greased the wheel of the economy by preparing for Sandy and that she looks for love out to sea and not on land.
My thoughts and prayers are will everyone worrying and waiting.

  11. We have gotten three calls from BGE warning us to be prepared. We usually lose power for 5-7 days and I expect this to be worse. Add to that the fact that our new generator won't start so all of our preparations are for naught. We are in Ellicott City in a neighborhood with huge old trees and above ground power lines. Plus my youngest child turns 10 tomorrow and today is her party....recipe for stress. Good luck everybody!

  12. Annapolis is a zoo. I keep hoping the estimates are off (in a good way) as I'm smack dab in floodland and really don't want to hear how everyone suffers, as it disturbs me too much...seeing the radar shots makes my blood pressure soar. Good luck to everyone and stay safe!!

  14. Meg,

Good luck with the storm and the sump pump! We have been having terrible wind and rain here already and they are saying that the storm will not move past us for another 24 hours. I am already sick of it!

    Stay safe, Elizabeth

  16. High up in the near-mountain desert we're thinking of you.

And I thought George Clooney was supposed to manifest during Perfect Storms. Check your basement for a dashing movie actor selflessly keeping the water at bay.
