On Your Mark!

I had a lovely lunch with Toad, of To The Manner Born, and his charming step-daughter, or his bonus daughter, as he calls her! We went to Petit Louis, one of Baltimore’s best restaurants and had a brilliant time over a delicious meal.petit louisOn Sunday, I swung by The Book Thing, and only managed to get one book before I got chucked out for bad behaviour. (I had yelled at some eejit for driving down the little one-way street BT’s on, the wrong way, and she came into the place and started freaking out on me! We both got thrown out, but I actually left.) However, the book that I did pick up was a good one. A true design classic!hamptonIt’s Mark Hampton’s 1989 book of essays from House & Garden, “On Decorating”.  There are essays that cover a three-year period, plus nine essays written especially for the book. hampton3 One of the things I like best about this book are the beautiful water-colour illustrations done by Mark Hampton, along with his beautiful calligraphic handwriting for the captions. hampton2Just leave me a comment and let me know if you’re interested in winning a copy of “On Decorating” and Connor will pick a winner on Friday. (US residents only… so sorry!)

  5. Ha! Got into it on Sunday with someone driving the wrong way in Whole Foods parking lot who promptly stole our long awaited spot.

We live on a little one way street and are always hightailing it outdoors to let people know they are on a ONE WAY STREET.

So I've got your back sister. And I'd love the book. In that order.

  7. I already have the book, but just wanted to say, as an unsolicited comment, that I think yelling at "eejts" doesn't do either of you any good. And so many have been in the situation so often, they have become gun-toters.

  8. I would love it, too. How odd that they would take it so far as to follow you into the book store. People have no cushion anymore, but then again, people didn't used to do these things.

  9. I am sure you did not find that situation amusing at all but, truth be told, if I had seen two women shrieking at each other in a book sale and then get thrown out, I would have giggled.
I shall keep my eye out for my own copy. I'm guessing Connor won't be choosing me after chuckling like that. ;)

  11. Oi, Kerry! I wasn't shrieking! I was telling this chick to step away from me. She was about thisclose to me, following me through the warehouse and she wouldn't leave. I think that someone else said something to the owner before I did. It was just really creepy.

  14. Sigh. I'm sure The Devoted Classicist is right. I think you took the high road and left the shop. But I have been in similar situations where it was near impossible to not say anything, i.e., a mini van stopped in front of me at a red light, backs up, hits my car, the light promptly turns green and mini van drives off. I followed and managed to flag the mini van down to discover it is driven by a 30-ish woman driving and many children as passengers all in sports uniforms. Her excuse? She had too many kids in the car and couldn't see well -- that's why they call it an accident! All delivered with a smirking smile! I was livid. Why didn't she stop, I asked. Oh, she didn't think it was necessary, and again she said "that's why they call it an accident." We live in a town where most everyone is literate and many very well educated. An education is no guarantee of a lack of stupidity, rudeness and various unpleasantries.

  16. Oh, Meg, you are really lucky that twit didn't go bang up your car, or worse, YOU...why is it that those in the wrong always are belligerent and volatile? Ugh! I planned on going to the Book Thing this wend but got sidetracked. I could have met you (and, erm, snagged that book, one I have been wanting for ages!).

  17. Love the book and WANT IT!!! Hope I win this one!

Girl! I swear...sometimes trouble just hunts you down!!! Glad you left as she was OBVIOUSLY unbalanced. I would be terrified to just walk up on top of a stranger, yelling and cursing at them, for fear they might pull out a gun and shoot me on the spot. This is NOT the world we shared in first grade!!!

  19. If I won "On Decorating" I would enjoy it first and then pass it on to Amy in my art class. She is a designer and wants to learn to do beautiful renderings like the ones in the book!

  21. Hi, Meg, I would love to win a copy of the MH book! I am sorry about your run-in with the crazy lady. But, I admire your gumption in pointing out the driver's mistake. We can't ignore unsafe behavior of others because we are afraid. You go girl!!

  22. Just be careful! That is scary! People have guns! That person was "venting" ; probably had nothing to do with you!

    EK!

  23. Oh Meg, I misunderstood. I absolutely hate it when people invade my personal space, add a dose of creepy and I'd flip out.
