The July installment of Maira Kalman's illustrations and words is up on the New York Times' website, here. It's all about Ben Franklin, who is nearly as interesting as Thomas Jefferson. Did you know that Franklin patented a type of peach? And the bobby pin (kirby grip)? And the odometer?

I saw her work earlier this week and thought it was amazing. MB
ReplyDeleteI love her posts so much! The historical information, the art, the handwriting... why aren't textbooks written like this? Wouldn't our history classes have been so much more fun? And, speaking for myself, I'd probably have retained a lot more!
ReplyDeletedon't you just love these posts -
ReplyDeleteMarnie... they're just magical drawings, aren't they?
ReplyDeleteLove her work.
ReplyDeleteGood to know! I love all these little factoids!
ReplyDeleteThis is just the best. I am hoping for a whole great series and a BOOK, so I can look anytime. Thanks for the link.
ReplyDeleteShe is amazing. Plus, I love Benjamin Franklin.
ReplyDeleteLast Thanksgiving, my brother and sister and I had a conversation about which founding father was our favorite. We each, independently, decided that even though Jefferson was the logical choice (the food, the wine, the sharing of alma maters), Franklin was our favorite. And it was because of the inventions.
I wish I had the kind of imagination and vision of our fore fathers!
ReplyDeletelove these! Hope it's not sweltering down there in MD!
ReplyDeleteEvery one of these has been memorable. As Mrs. B says, I, too, hope there is a book. I want to be able to turn to them any time I want. This one prompted me to go get a book on Franklin.
