I’ve been carrying around one of the beautiful spoons I received last week and have been showing it to friends and family. It’s just such a special gift and I am so proud to own them! It is like a talisman of good things, which I’ve needed this week.
This evening, when I returned from a little dinner, I pulled the spoon out of my handbag and put it together with a knife and fork from my collection. As you can see, none of the pieces are identical. The hasp, or where the “working part” meets the handle is joined in a different way in each piece. As I look at the 40 or so pieces I have, they all have some variation. My chef friend said that the bowl of the spoon was the perfect size to make a quenelle. I think she’s right!
they make quite a set. I love the slight variations in the pieces. I love that they have been traveling about with you! la
ReplyDeleteMeg, You'd laugh if you knew how often I have thought of your beautiful spoon gift since you first posted on them! Such a sweet gift, just so dear. They are perfection in so many ways. I love the way they fit into your collection, and the size of the bowl is beyond perfect- you can use them for so many things.
ReplyDeleteQuestion: do you use these every day, once a week, or on special occasions only?

Joan...This is my everyday silver. I have some formal silver: Mappin & Webb's Kings pattern, but I adore this, so it's what I use.
ReplyDeleteHi Dear Pigtown!
ReplyDeleteThese are so beautiful. What a fantastic observation--that the spoon is just the right size for making quenelle. In fact, the famous and fabulous chef Thomas Keller (French Laundry in the Napa Valley) believes that such a spoon is one of the essential tools for any kitchen--for shaping quenelles, shaping a scoop of sorbet or icecream or whipped cream perhaps, and for scooping things and...then...eating lovely soup or pudding--or just admiring. The gleam of the spoon is certainly delicious. www.thestylesaloniste.com
Your cutlery is lovely Meg - the spoon such a wonderful gift to compliment your other pieces. It would not matter what kind of spoon I had I can never perfect a quenelle...good luck, xv.
ReplyDeleteThese are simply gorgeous! Using beautiful things every day elevates the ordinary, doesn't it.
ReplyDeleteLovely and loving. What better talisman? If we don't make everyday special for us in some way, we missed an opportunity. So glad these make you happy.
ReplyDeleteThat makes a very handsome place setting.
ReplyDeleteLOVE you spoons, forks and knifes! Actually I like mix&match much better then all looking the same, it's boring, don't you think?
ReplyDeleteI've read on the pure style blog you're going to the DC big flea in September with Eddie, so lucky!
I went there in June and loved it. there is an entry on my blog about it. But I'm flying back to Hong Kong next week, so will hope to catch up with Eddie's flea market trip some other time.
They're absolutely stunning!
ReplyDeleteThey really are lovely, and all the more so because each piece is unique. What a happy set!
ReplyDeleteI have read, and have no way of proving it because I am old and no longer remember where I read it, but, the two piece spoons and forks and knives have a problem.
ReplyDeleteThe problem is that all sorts of bacteria gathers and stays in the area where the two parts are joined together.
Much disease originates there and unless your dish water is blistering hot the germs thrive there on leftover food, and a brew of soap suds and grease.
You will never see two piece silverware in a hospital, restaurant or hotel. Their insurance companies will not permit it.
Your tableware is a showpiece and probably best at that.

I much prefer a mix, so much more interesting. These are perfection though, anyway you slice it. The ivory handles are stunning.
ReplyDeleteThanks for letting me know that, Abe. I've been using these pieces for ages and haven't suffered at all! The knives in my silver are two pieced, as well. They don't go into the dishwasher and never have. I use this cutlery every day, and will continue to!
ReplyDeleteI am so freaking jealous I can't stand it.
ReplyDeleteIt is very interesting for me to read that article. Thanx for it. I like such themes and anything that is connected to them. I definitely want to read a bit more on that blog soon.
