A Well-Dressed Man

There are a few blogs that I read that are aimed more towards the sartorial splendors of being a well-dressed man, mainly the Mid-Atlantic/New England version, with a bent towards the classic/prep look. Each of these blogs also touches on different topics, so they're fun to read for that.
My nephew is graduating from prep school next week and my sister had a party on the porch to celebrate. He and his best friend have been through 12 years of school side-by-side, and their mothers have been best friends since their school years, as well.
One of the guests, and a parent of another graduate, caught my eye. He was dressed perfectly for a late spring, late afternoon party on the porch. He was wearing a great blue and white striped shirt, a pair of white linen Bermuda-length shorts and, best of all, a gorgeous pair of white bucks!
I asked if I could take his picture and told him why, and we had a brief conversation about how easy it is to dress a little better than to constantly wear jeans and a t-shirt. He told me about the seersucker suit he'd start wearing this week and how he'd looked for the white bucks before finding them at an end-of-season sale and buying a pair for him and a pair for his son. It was such fun to talk to someone who really understands the art of dressing well.
The roses are from my sister's garden. I love love love the pale pink!

  1. Ahh... white bucks and seersucker. Definitely NOT enough of those these days! It doesn't take much for a guy to look 1000x's better than chinos and t-shirt. And your this gentleman you have photo'd looks perfectly comfortable too!

  4. i was wondering what was necessarily great about the party gent until I scrolled down to his well turned legs and 'bucks'. Gorgeous, I agree but this, sadly, is not a
    look that British men generally aspire to. Now, my husband was in the Navy where this combination of shorts and bucks was standard in 'tropical' uniform. But with the addition of long white socks. Nice nice nice.

  5. Nothing better than a well-dressed man and a bouquet of pink roses! Preferably together.

  6. Rose... I remember my British father wearing Bermuda-length shorts, knee socks and loafers to summer parties. Maybe it's a mid-Atlantic look!

  10. This is such a perfectly Baltimore post - I love it!

    My husband wears his seersucker suit with light brown saddle bucks. Not quite as perfect as white, but considering his ability to get dirty fast, more practical.

  12. Kit... apparently, there's a chalk type substance that you put on white bucks to keep them clean.

  15. * I am SO SMILING here!!!~ A VERY SIMILAR conversation JUST CAME UP at a small, outdoor dinner party last weekend~~~ all of "our" husbands looked so nice as usual~~~ silk bermudas, handsome belts n' shoes, great shirts, etc. (and all laundered beautifully, by the same dry cleaner, of course... it was a "neighborhood" dinner)~~~

    ANYHOOO, the REASON we gals discussed how pleased we were w/ the WAY our husbands "LOOKED" was BECAUSE the son of the host & hostess was home from school, visiting, & he looked pretty darned ol' "ragged"... and we ALL smiled, cuz that's what young adults "DO" the world over, it seems!

    He's such a REALLY NICE, ACCOMPLISHED young man, & we all agreed that at HIS age, he can get AWAY with it! (But, he actually looked like my husband does on the weekend, when he does "the poop patrol" from the dog!!! We gals got a good smile out of THAT one)!!!

    ~~~ Ahhh, "youth" truly IS wasted on the young!!!~~~~ *
  17. I love it when a man dresses smartly! Think of how well-behaved we would all be if we dressed better every day!
  18. I remember my Dad was one of the most well dressed men I have known. He had white bucks, wingtips, topsiders (he was a sailor) and Vans for the very casual times. I cannot for the life of me remember seeing a pair of white bucks since my Father wore them. California is just not what is was. Pasadena might be the last hold-out.
  19. Hoorah for he who paired the bucks and seersucker shorts! For those who need to know: there are buck bags that dispense chalk to keep the shoes white. I've also heard that a "magic eraser" by Mr. Clean works wonders on more than the walls.
    Think I'll go put on the bucks for the afternoon's errands. Thanks for the inspiration.
    (And thanks for the mention. I'm in very good company.)
