Talk Talk

I was asked by one of my old schools to give a talk in October. The school, Roland Park Country School, has a continuing education program called Kaleidoscope which has a wide range of courses. As part of the series, they usually do several talks about Baltimore. And as you may know, I think that Baltimore is so much more than The Wire, or a John Waters’ movie.scan0002

Out of almost 1900 posts I’ve done over the past six-and-a-half years, more than 600 have been about Baltimore in some form. I think that this talk is going to be a lot of fun. I will be telling stories, showing slides, and generally professing my love for my city. Hope to see you there.

  2. Showing slides. or a power point slide presentation. Perhaps you could convince the Media Specialist to record the audio for a podcast for all the darlings absent that day--- and well They could archive the Kaleidoscope presentations in a form for their audio library. No doubt some clever AV tech could handle these tasks and log Community Service hours if the librarian er MEDIA specialist was not too harried. Good Luck PS never have seen the Wire, heard it was popular there was a rap song too by that name I think as my teenage son would sing " heard it on the wire" over and over . I hope more people go above and beyond expectation, as opposed to shirking responsibilities where ever whenever ....

  3. Too bad they don't apply for grant money. I just looked at some of the offerings from the 2009 catalog. rather impressive. $35 maybe out of someone's price range. but someone must have a sense of humor a course How to boil water. Perhaps it is a science chemistry related session. 40 plus years ago Julia Child demonstrated how to prepare an omelet , 40 plus years after that appearance on PBS Martha Stewart in one of her recent endless promotional appearances demonstrated how to prepare an omelet. Perhaps you could prepare an omelte Baltimore style.

  8. Meg, Another great event too far away...

I have to stick up for the Wire though, particularly since you haven't seen it. Technically it is set in Baltimore, but it really stands as "American eastern city and American cultural problems". Its an excellent show, very moving, focusing in an unforgettable way on the futility and hypocrisy of many administrative systems and the
decay in our economic engines;a system which eats well-intentioned people up or corrupts them along the way. I never watch the show and think, Baltimore must be particularly awful. I think, "oh yeah, I've heard politicians
just like that before, or seen that, or met people very similar to this, and XXX place was just like that". You really ought to forgive them for filming it in Baltimore, they might have used a Canadian set, like Sex and the City, and spent no money in Baltimore!

    1. I hear that the Four Seasons is nothing short of spectacular. But because I don't stay at hotels/inns, I don't know too much about any. I will check around.
