Weekend Update: Part 75

Luckily, it was rather a low-key weekend and I could catch up with things around the house. The weather took a turn for the cooler on Saturday, and between the temperature drop and the change in the way the light looks, it’s easy to tell that we’re on the slippery slope down to fall.

On Saturday morning, pals, Julie and David and I hit up a local neighbourhood yard sale. It’s an old established neighbourhood with huge historic townhouses, so there are always people clearing out their basements, downsizing due to age, and just getting rid of things. We each managed some scores. David bought a vintage fireman’s “call-out” jacket that he’s planning to repurpose. Julie got a lot of kitchen equipment from an ex-Williams-Sonoma employee, and I got some books, and a needlepoint doorstop.

One of the books I snagged was Natalie Alabama Chanin’s Stitch Book. imageCoincidentally, there was a piece in the Wall Street Journal about her the same day.imageI am still mad for the Wall Street Journal’s weekend paper, especially the Off Duty section. Each weekend there are a half dozen or more articles relevant to something happening in my life.

I am so pleased to let you know that I’ve been invited to be a Sponsored Blogger at High Point Furniture Market for the Fall Market. imageI am once again, being sponsored by Hooker Furniture, and I can’t wait to see what they’ve got in store for their fall line!

One of the best things about this time of year is that there are tons of fresh flowers at the Farmers’ Market. They are at their peak and each week, I’ve been picking up different bunches. globe amaranthThis week, I bought some bright purple Globe Amaranth, and put them into a chased silver vase I’d plucked from a bin at the thrift shop.

I do love baseball, and the Baltimore Orioles split their series with the {very unpopular} New York Yankees. On a good note, I did manage to find a video of my favourite rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame”.

It’s by the GooGoo Dolls, and is from the 1996 season.

  2. At a tag sale three rusty trivets oh clean them up I thought. Upon an internet search rusty trivet projects I stumbled upon rusty object transfers. Just might see if the rusty pig rose and fish (sounds like a bar) will bear fruit and grace an apron or pillow or table runner.

  3. Good haul as usual. It's fall weather and football! I have the windows and doors open as I sit here and I'm slightly chilly.

    Finally.

  5. We subscribe to the WSJ but thanks to their shoddy packaging and the storm, our weekend paper was totally drenched and unsalvageable! I look forward to reading it every Sunday morning but missed it this weekend :-( Agreed, it's the BEST!

  7. I remember David and the crystals.. sounds like all three of you had a great time searching and retrieving

After your last post my son told me something (afraid it goes in one ear and out the other)about the Orioles and Yankees.. he, like you, loves baseball..now we can see it in Aust. When I was his age we would have had no idea about it .

I'm fascinated by that silver object behind the candlesticks in your first photo...what is it ?

    1. Simple...Yankees hate the Orioles and the Orioles HATE the Yankees!

The silver spike is a piece of mercury glass.
