I stopped in at the Book Thing today to see what was there, and to drop off a dozen or two books. Some of the shelves were pretty bare, but Saturday is their busy day because there’s a farmers’ market a few blocks away and a lot of people go both places.
On the shelf, under some other books, was a pristine copy of Billy Baldwin Remembers. As I opened it, a few pieces of paper fell out. One was a letter from the publisher to the book reviewer, asking for a review of the book. And if the reviewer didn’t want to do it, then a request to pass it along to the women’s or society editor. How times have changed! The other papers were photographs to be used in the review. One was a picture of Baldwin, standing in a room, and the other two were rooms he decorated, including Diana Vreeland’s famous Garden in Hell Red Room. So, just leave a comment telling everyone which designer you think is heir to Baldwin’s classic style, and Connor-pup will pick his favourite on Friday, September 25th.
IMO, Miles Redd is it!
ReplyDeleteOh you are lucky!!! I've always been looking for this book at the bookthing! I'm actually doing my own giveaway on a book from the bookthing TONIGHT, come to my blog for details, I of course link to you.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I think Miles Redd is the heir to Baldwin's style kingdon!
I totally agree Miles Reed is it. Do you have any of his famous slipper chairs laying around. Would so like to have a pair!!!
ReplyDeleteHA!!HA!!!
Thanks for a smokin give-away!!!

I have to agree, Miles Redd seems to be the inheritor. I have always loved Billy Baldwin's work, although Diana's red lair gives me a bit of a headache--I'm sure that it perfectly complemented her personality and savoir vivre. Once again, a super post and congratulations on "the find."
ReplyDeleteThere will never be an heir so to speak, though so many are rightfully inspired by Mr. Baldwin.
ReplyDeleteBilly Baldwin was an original. Nowadays everyone is derivative to a fault.
Tell Connor to please pick me :-)
xo xo
Well I hate to go with the crowd too, but I have to agree that it's Miles Redd. What an amazing find...tell sweet Connor to pick me. :)
ReplyDeleteShawn K.
I to agree with everyone else, Miles Redd is the heir to Baldwin's style... would love to win a copy of this famous book, fingers crossed in Calgary....
ReplyDeleteRegards, Carol Ann
Well I am going to be different and dare to say Thomas Britt. You simply have to see some of his work to see what I mean, if you aren't familiar!
ReplyDeleteMeg I would adore winning this fabulous book!

Society Page: to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language. Hamish Bowles - tastemaker (though not really a decorator). KDM
ReplyDeleteoooh, I've been thinking of this all morning, and while I agree Miles Redd is a good choice, I've got a few other recommendations. For timeless, classic style: Barbara Barry or Mariette Himes Gomez. But what about some of the even newer blood, who offers classic with a bit of a twist, like Baldwin did? I'm thinking Victoria Hagan, or Celerie Kemble. Amazing that the designers I suggested are all women, although that truly wasn't intentional!
ReplyDeleteI don't care for Miles Redd. I would say Nate Berkus, or Steve Whaley who is based in Connecticut and used to work for Parish Hadley. You are very generous to have this giveaway. Ann
ReplyDeleteI will have to cast my vote for Miles Redd. This is such a nice giveaway, Meg! Would LOVE to win!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
When I read the question, I thought, "Miles Redd," then I opened the comments. Guess I'm not very original. Laughing.
ReplyDeletemiz v is more than just 'right', there will never be another mr. baldwin! having been introduced to him once by a friend, his persona is still in my mind, and completely individual.
ReplyDeleteaaarrrfff to connor. m
There are a lot of good choices out there. The heir apparent would need to be innovative yet classic. They would need to appreciate the past while looking towards the future. And a timeless room is a must. Miles Redd is a popular choice but he seems more like a twin instead of an heir. My vote is for Michael Smith(oval office not included).
ReplyDeleteOkay, Meg, here's an audacious nomination:
ReplyDeleteThe design successor to Billy Baldwin is AngloFiles. I make the case here:

I agree with Mandy!!! AngloFiles is it!
ReplyDeleteIt's Anglofiles!
ReplyDeleteConnor,
ReplyDeleteAs many have already said, Miles Redd has the over the top elegance of BB. ALthough his style might be considered derivative by some, it is a testament to Baldwin's genius that those designs are so classic and timeless.
Woof!
I don't think anyone can compare with Billy Baldwin. He was an original, and was a very unique combination of crisp modernism with a rather staid sense of tradition and what is appropriate or fitting. He reminds me of Chanel in that he had a sense of perfect taste, simplicity, classicism, comfort, and clarity that doesn't look dated. Like Chanel, the best we can do is study his look, leitmotifs, and do our best to re-interpret the look. Cottons, slipper chairs, classic antiques, understatement, etcetera.
ReplyDeleteMandy's Throne Room is exquisite. Anglofiles would be a most worthy successor to Billy B.
ReplyDeleteI vote for AngloFiles! Baldwinesque if ever there was.
