After a lot of great input from some trusted advisors – and many thanks to you all – we’ve finally come up with the semi-final design for the Toile de Baltimore. This is where I started:
Then I took it to this:I decided it needed one more building to balance it, and so I had to think of an iconic building in Baltimore that would touch another aspect of the city. After attending a baseball game one evening I came up with… No, not the trend-setting Camden Yards, but the B&O Roundhouse, which you can see from the concourse of the ballpark.
The B&O Roundhouse is the largest 22-sided building in the US, which is a great trivia question. It’s also located in a different part of the city than the other three buildings. The history of the B&O Railroad parallels the building of the city of Baltimore and is interconnected with many of the prominent buildings here, including the glamorous Evergreen House. So, here’s the semi-final version of the Toile de Baltimore…
Drumroll……
The four buildings are Homewood House The Patterson Park Pagoda Mount Vernon Place and the B&O Roundhouse.
Let me know your thoughts and suggestions. Your input has helped make this a great project.
Looks very good. I like the original also (even though you are correct that the State House does not belong). Ft. McHenry might have been another good choice.
ReplyDeleteWhen you are done with this, perhaps you need to do a "modern Bawlmer" version. The possibilities are endless: the Domino sugar factory, Brewers Hill with Mr. Boh, the Hard Rock Guitar, the Homicide fire/police station, the old Haussner's building, Cafe Hon, a form-stoned block of row houses, Cross Street Market.
Anon... We had the fort on an early version, but unless you do a view from the air, you can't tell what it is.
ReplyDeleteAlso, what about the Man|Woman statue?
I seriously love them all. And think the modern one needs a hipster in Hampden for sure! What about the Bromo Seltzer Tower?
ReplyDeleteNelle... excellent idea.. I already had two tower-y buildings, so that's for the next one!
ReplyDeleteWe spent hours at the Roundhouse a few years ago. The design looks so great, Meg, can't wait to see it made up.
ReplyDeleteI feel like there's too much white space. Maybe the trees in the Homewood picture should be taller so it's not such a rectangle? Or maybe the background clouds should be darker? Or bring back the random people with the carriage from the first design.
ReplyDeleteI also think either the B&O or the pagoda could have their paths extend a little more the way the monument one does.
Meg, I think you are on to something. I think it would be lovely if we all could order our own hometown toile, custom-made by you! I'll take Alexandria.
