Lilacs and Other Flowers

I have a theory that after our brutal winter along the Mid-Atlantic, we are having the most beautiful spring, because all living things are rejoicing that winter’s over! flowers 002 The flowers have been spectacular this spring, and today, one of my co-workers brought me a massive bunch of lilacs from her country property. flowers 005 They smell fabulous and really brighten my office. flowers 004 I’ve placed them in a vase in my fireplace where they are set off to perfection.flowers 008Thanks, Maggie!

  1. A neighbor gave me a bunch of lilacs last week. They only lasted a few days, but the scent was spectacular.

Do you have a way to extend them? I wish mine had lasted longer.

  3. I was thinking the same thing, about how nice the spring is, and how well the azaleas, seem to be doing after the difficult winter. Lots of leland cypress and other tall firs seem to be damaged, or have already been cut down in my neighborhood, but overall, the flowering woodies and evergreens seem to be doing well in MoCo.

  4. I've read that snow has ions in it that plants like that are not in rain. It also seems into the groundwater better than rain, which runs off more quickly. Finally, it insulates, so underneath, the soil only gets so cold and no more. Anyway, they are beautiful photos, and you guys certainly deserve a great spring.

  9. The lilacs are gorgeous.....there is nothing quite as beautiful as an East Coast Spring. The new green of the trees, the rampant colors and the smell of freshness and new life. Here on the West Coast (LA), we are having a treat: a cool rainy Spring--perfect!!! Thanks for the great post.

  10. That first photo's gotta be Sherwood Gardens. Yes?

The lilacs have been breathtaking. If I pass a bush while I'm out walking, I always stop to inhale the fragrance. It's one of those things you wish you could take with you. Is there anything as beautiful, as transporting, as spring?
