I was scrolling through the rooms at Restoration Hardware on-line this evening. It might be because my house is only 11.5 feet wide that I think that the scale of these wine barrel chandeliers is a bit oppressive. While they are in the same scale as the other pieces, I must say that I think they are too big and too low.

Definitely too low. They look to be only 18" above the table. Must have been for the photo? Now, what I really think is oppressive are the bases under the table. They could hold up the Parthenon!

ReplyDeleteEven with the light colors, the room has a very heavy feel. It's not a comfortable feeling room.

ReplyDeleteI agree, Meg. Everything's overscale, but swap out the chandliers for something less heavy and maybe the rest of all that big stuff might work. Great photo but not a real room.
ReplyDeleteA) This is a really bad photoshop job... RH is infamous for it- have a look at their photos/catalogues and you will see clues as to how heavily they have been photoshopped (and not very well I might add). That is definitely contributing to the sense that the scale is severely out of balance. Look at the reflection in the two palladian mirrors for a start - there's no way that the door in between the two mirrors would fit in this room given the ceiling height in the reflection.

ReplyDeleteTwo low, yes...but remember this is marketing... not design, they are selling all the things in the picture, so they cram in as much as they can... as my design teachers use to say "just because it is in a magazine, doesn't make it right"...they use to have us find the wrong in magazines every friday afternoon... the one who found the most in 1 hour got to go home early... good times...
ReplyDeleteThe chandeliers in the photo are too low - but people often hang them too high. If they are up near the ceiling you don't get enough light on the table. I agree with the other comment that they were probably moved down for the photograph.

ReplyDeleteThat's my bad photoshopping effort in the upper left corner. there was some writing there, so i just fiddled with it for about 1 minute... of course, i am not getting paid the big bucks to photoshop for RH, so I didn't try too hard!

ReplyDeleteActually, I love it...except for the chairs... they don't even look comfortable dining room chairs...for me the chairs don't work but the BIG overscale (yes, I admit) and down low chandeliers do add DRAMA and interest.

I don't like RH new look. I was extremely disappointed with the most recent catalog.

ReplyDeleteRestoration Hardware has taken great design elements and transformed these elements into set design. It initially looks good, but upon going deeper--there is no soul and the scale is definitely off. As for the chandeliers: too big, too low, too much. Thanks for the opportunity to express my little opinion.
ReplyDeletei;m in the minority here - i love this picture! those chairs are really tall - but I just love everything about RH these days. their stuff though is very overscaled. but many pieces come in two sizes - reg and apartment.

ReplyDeletetoo big and too low - in fact, I don't really like a lot of the light fixtures that are being used now in kitchens over tables and islands in all the design pictures and rooms - just seems overdone . chairs are too big too in my opinion
ReplyDeleteI like the comment about not having enough room to pass the sauce. I have very mixed feellings about RH, it makes it hard for us local guys making things in the US competing with a huge corporation making "costume furniture" in third world countries by bare foot kids in factories for so little money...
ReplyDeleteI thought this look was intriguing for about a week, and now I'm tired of it. I predict that a couple of years from now we'll look back on this heavy, clunky, gray Belgian look and ask, "What were we thinking!"
