The L Word

Not that L-word, actually.

In our family, for Christmas we pick names and then we pick a letter. Everyone has to buy their person presents beginning with that letter. A year or so ago was the letter P.

I got my brother the following:

Pens & Pencils

image

Personalized pads of paperimage

Virginia Peanutsimage

Fine Imported Italian Pastasimageand a periodical publication!

This year’s letter is L. And my target is a college-age girl. And I am stumped.

I could buy her Liquor, but her mother might will object. image

A black leather jacket would be very nice, but she attends school in the south.image

If she was a six-year old boy, she might like a light sabre!image

She and her siblings Love, Love, Love, Love Actually.image

She’s probably not a fan of liquorice, although I certainly am!image

I would Love to hear your suggestions. I am at a Loss!

  2. What about something in Leopard skin, some Lollies ( actually they are probably what you call candy), linen or linen covered books or, if all else fails give French gifts ... Le or La whatever.

  3. If she's at all preppy, how about an LLBean gift card, if she's sporty then LuLuLemon. Lemon scented lotions, lime ditto

  7. Lingerie--can be preppy or girly--or a gift card to Victoria's Secret to choose her own. Leather--my son just received a wonderful, hand-tooled leather journal cover that he found on etsy. Lime or lemon--either something green or yellow or something lime or lemon-flavored, like Key lime pie or lemon bars. Books: anything starting with "Last", "Legend," "Life" or "Letters" (must be hundreds of books with titles starting with those words.) Or "Lord of the Rings," "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe."

  10. Hmm, goes to school down south... Lilly Pulitzer, lottery ticket, Luluemon work out clothes, Depending where she is in the south a leather jacket would still work. My daughter wears her's in the winter in Savannah.

  12. Hope she doesn't read your blog! Surely she'd figure out who her Secret Santa is!

  13. The book "Love in the Time of Cholera", cute lamp (from Ikea, she needs good lighting to stay up late at night to study), labels (for her clothes and belongings, since she's away from home), luggage (light-weight, practical and nice looking).

  14. Oh, just saw the cutest "latte mug" (polka dot or chevron) on cwonder.com!

  15. Dear Miss Meggie: Lavender, as in a lavender candle or the lavender sheet spray or something lavender to wash her clothes.

Also, do like the idea of the leather jacket. Even in the South, there'll be cool days during the winter when she'll want to wear a little something. And she does come home to the Mid-Atlantic, so she can always wear it there, too.

For jewelry, a locket. Also: maybe a Christmas Labrador ornament? Or a puzzle (as a labyrinth)? Is she's feminine, something with lace; if she's spends time in her college lab, maybe something for her lab coat; if she's into sports, something featuring lacrosse? Shoes with laces. An antique ladder-back chair for her room. Ladybugs. Does she frequent any lakes, maybe something for hiking...??? A certificate to have her over for a lamb dinner sometime she's in town. A ladle and other cooking utensils. Lalique Crystal picture frame. If she's into biology, maybe a large book highlighting body parts, a million of which begin with "L." If she's an artist, (latex) paint. A joke book to make her Laugh. Summer items of lawn bowling, a great lawn chair, decor for a lawn party. The ever-amazing classic movie, "Lawrence of Arabia." Anything with leaves...maybe some sort of terrarium? (That would be easy to take care of in college.) (If you really want to go expensive) A trip to the Leeward Islands!!

Ah, the list is endless! Can't wait to see what you select!!

    Happy holidays - Miss M.A.

  17. All the many ideas sound good and she would wear a leather jacket in Charleston. I was there last month. Lucky girl to be in such an interesting and fun town. What about stationary so she can write many Letters...a dying art. Include the stamps.
What a great family idea may start using it myself.

  20. Something from L'Occitane, Le Sport Sac, or Le Cruset, something made from lace, something lacquered, lady bugs, lady slipper orchids, Lego, Lake Champlain chocolates, lapel pins, a laptop, lottery tickets, a lunch box, and a Labrador Retriever.

  21. Hmm…it is a bit more difficult since you've not seen her recently. I suggest nail lacquer and lippy from Butter London, Liberty of London pjs/underwear/robe (Sleepy Joe's or Liberty), a locket, leather case, sweater with lace inserts, or a top with lace, or a Laduree candle. Good luck.

  22. Some of your lemon curd, tied with a gift card for Lilly Pullitzer, inside a box filled with lavender?

  23. Gift card to Ann Taylor "Loft", though Lilly Pulitzer is always a hit down south. Lipstick, Coco Chanel perhaps? A cool Lanyard. Something by Lanvin if you win the lottery! Linen scarf. Lift ticket for a ski resort, if she will be home for the holidays. A charm for a Pandora or other bracelet, like a lion or a lamb. Tea from Laduree (the NYC store ships), my fav! A nail polish that begins with L. Ok, that's about all my tiny brain can think of at the moment! Good luck!
