I was browsing OKL when I saw this piece of craziness. 
I collect linen tea towels because I don’t like using paper towels. In fact, it takes me two or three months to use a roll of paper towels. I find great linen tea towels at yard sales and thrift shops, and I only buy the ones that are brand new. You can tell which are new, because they still have the sizing in them.

Agreed...I buy them on ebay...It's fun to find them in in other countries...I never spend more than $10....k
ReplyDeleteKathy... I just found four brand new ones from England at an estate sale. They were $1. each. Maybe I should pop up to Ikea and get some bright frames and then sell them for a massive profit.
DeleteMeg, I was thinking of you last night when the new Tastemake sale came on line...my hair was standing on end! There were so many items for sale for outrageous prices, $399.00 for a yellow side table I saw the same table recently at the thrift store for $14.99 throw in a can of spray paint for $6.00 and I think you could save yourself a wad of cash.

It does always make me laugh to see some of their prices. And yet, there are other things that I think are very fairly priced.

ReplyDeleteWhile I purchase quite a bit, & quite often, from OKL, I do N*O*T EVER purchase RIDICULOUSLY PRICED things... I get a "chuckle" out of those who DO... (IE: $2500 for a small oil painting isn't bad I*F you really love it annnd KNOW, first-hand & close-up, exactly W*H*A*T you are purchasing... WHO painted it, WHEN, etc.
***BUUUUUT, you are STILL not SEEING the STROKES, and TOUCHING & FEELING it first in person.... IMPERATIVE to me for such a purchase... besides, there's no "story" behind it if you buy it THAT way!!!
*** There are some craa-aaazy people out there, me thinketh!!! ***

I agree... I need to touch things... feel them... sit on them... before i buy them. i can't imagine buying a $3000 sofa without further inspection and if it's an "antique" knowing its provenance.
DeleteI'm also a vintage linen addict, but I can tell you honestly I've never paid more than $20, even for my rarest tea towel that came from Ulster, Ireland. That price is just incredibly insane. The really interesting thing will be to see if some lunatic is willing to pay it.
ReplyDeleteOne more note: I use paper towels like they're going out of style... because I'd never let my vintage linens touch anything but clean water dripping off clean dishes! I spill stuff constantly, and paper towels are my go-to wiper-uppers.
The Ulster linens are great and linen doesn't leave lint on dishes and glassware. But I use my linen towels for everything. and then i chuck them in the laundry... and then iron them. I keep them rolled up in a copper shaker-style box on the kitchen counter.

I love your OKL posts. Every time I see some ridiculous price, I wonder if you will do a post on it. I also use tea towels for everything. Mine are in a wire basket on my counter. The best ones are from garage sales, travel, and Ebay. As they get old and ratty, they are demoted to a drawer for cleaning supplies.

DeleteYes, I never use paper towels either -just when i clean the bathroom. I have so many tea towels that i find piecemeal like you. Plus when friends travel and ask what I'd like - i usually say teatowels (what a dork I am) -but i'd prefer that to the other crap one brings back from africa, etc. Plus -i have a pretty cool collection now!

Great idea to have people bring them back from trips. I have towels from Bermuda, England, Ireland, Cape Cod, Williamsburg and a bunch of calendar ones from the 1970's.
Deletewe were sailing once and didn't have the chart of the area where we were, but had a tea towel of it... navigating by tea towel! not the best idea.
