High Point: Hooker Furniture

As you might know, I was a sponsored blogger at High Point, which meant that I was there as an invited guest of both the High Point Market Authority and of the market showroom, Hooker Furniture. If you’ve been reading Pigtown*Design for any length of time, you know that I only talk about things that interest me, excite me, challenge me or fascinate me. So when Hooker offered to sponsor me for the Market, I did my homework and found that they’d be a good fit for me in many ways. First, I loved their furniture. It’s just gorgeous and some of their furniture and much of their upholstery is beautifully made in the United States. Second, Hooker is environmentally aware, using sustainable woods and participating in a voluntary environmental management program. Third, Hooker is philanthropic, establishing a scholarship fund for employees’ children. So I am pleased to be affiliated with a company with many admirable qualities.

Now, on to the goodies! Oh, the things that I saw. I wished that I had a big house with lots of space to fill instead of a small 1900’s-built farmhouse.

One of the things that really struck me was the incredible detailing on Hooker’s pieces. You can tell a lot about a manufacturer by the attention they pay to the little details.

These beautiful bubbled-glass knobs turn up on a few pieces, and they add a wonderful dimension.

The handles on some of the pieces are unlike any others I’ve seen, and they’re a unique feature that helps elevate each piece.

Another wonderful element of Hooker’s Furniture is the patterns on their pieces. From this Chinoiserie-style motif, to this verre eglomise (reverse painted glass) fronts on this pieceto the subtle gilding on this pieceto the scrolls on this dresser, and this one, to this fleur de lis backed with mirror, each piece is just fabulous.

And colours – really, I saw something in almost every hue in the rainbow.  Red (or pink) and orange.

Yellow. Green.

Blue.

Indigo(ish).

Violet.

Hooker’s colour combinations are wonderful, too. I really am quite smitten with grey and orange.
