Hedgehogs

Hedgehogs have been popping up in my life recently.baby hedgehogHedgehogs are not indigenous to the United States, and most Americans grow up knowing about them from the stories of Beatrix Potter and her character, Mrs. Tiggywinkle.  hedgehog2There was a children’s television show on in the UK that told the stories in both animation and live action. It was excellent. You can see the opening credits here.mrs

They are nocturnal and are not the brightest bulbs, but their cuteness makes up for a lot of small sins. I remember trying to feed the hedgehog in my cousin’s garden (catfood) and it never showed up, perhaps to the large number of small children running around.hedgehog3I would see hedgehogs crossing the road on my way home from the castle. Once, I stopped the car to make sure one of the wee creatures made it across the road and wasn’t smushed.

Just recently, I saw a little change purse from Kate Spade. It was very cute, but it almost looked more like a fish than a hedgehog, especially around the mouth.katespade purse

My mother just saw a recipe from Colonial Williamsburg, of all places, for a Hedgehog Cheese Ball! That’s going to be my contribution to Easter lunch.  I am hoping mine looks more like this, hedgehogcheezeball

than like this…hedgehogcheezeball2

Given that hedgehogs are not native to these shores, there certainly are a lot of hedgehog products, including a completely disgusting hedgehog that Connor drags around. Clearly, the people who made it had never seen or heard one. It looks more like a gopher than a hedgehog.I also saw a hedgehog cheese grater, hedgehog-cheese-graterand hedgehog dryer balls which are supposed to keep your clothes fluffy and static-free.My mother collects hedgehogs – or else we all collect them for her – and we’ve found little gold hedgehog earrings, crystal hedgehogs, ceramic hedgehogs, and many more funny little pieces. My friend Janice sent me this 1584 Hans Hoffman watercolour and gouache on parchment,a gift to the Metropolitan Museum of Art from Annette de la Renta.

Do you like hedgehogs as much as I do?

  1. Jan Brett, a children's author and illustrator, has written books about a hedgehog named Hedgie. If your mom has grandchildren, maybe she would like them.

  4. I love the little hodgehegs as my daughter used to call them as a child. One visits my brothers garden nightly for some treats. Unfortunately you do see a lot of hedgehog pies on the road in the UK as I'm sure you know :-(

  11. I have always loved Hedgehogs. Beatrix Potter permanently fixed Mrs Tiggywinkle in my mind. We had friends with a door in their stone wall and I just knew the Tiggywinkle Family lived there. Last time I was in England there was a Beatrix Potter display at the V&A. Love your blogs. Happy Easter to you and yours.

  13. What a sweet little guy! I love him!

Here in British Columbia, we have a chocolate company called Purdy's that makes chocolate hedgehogs. Like all of Purdy's choclate, they're delicious.

  14. My aunt had a small hedgehog as a pet for a long time and as cute as it was, I did not see the point of it. I was always hiding behind the pillows on the sofa during hte day. It was nice to hold but just sort of frightened all the time. They are cute to look at. Yes, we have chocolate hedgehogs at Purdy's, as the previous person mentioned. I love to eat them.

  17. Yes, we had hedgehogs in England as we lived right on the edge of 'the country'. My son kept one for a time, but as they are often very flea ridden it did not come inside At All. He did enjoy going outside at night to watch it move about.
