If you’ve been reading Pigtown*Design for more than a week, you know of my deep love of Ladew Gardens, one of the most special and extraordinary places in Maryland, if not the United States. It is located about 25 miles north of Baltimore and its grounds are filled with incredible topiaries, wide spaces, long views, small gardens, and a stunning house at the center. This year’s Garden Tourism Awards were just given, and Ladew was named as one of the top five garden tourist spots in North America, which is very well-deserved. In addition to the Garden Festival which is May 5th, Ladew also has series of lectures, band concerts and polo matches throughout the summer. Check the schedule here. And you can read a piece a friend at Baltimore Fishbowl wrote about Ladew’s award here.
Congratulations to everyone at Ladew who works so incredibly hard to keep the grounds looking stunning!
Thank you.
ReplyDeleteMust see it.

It looks wonderful! I haven't been to Baltimore for many years, but I think it would be a great place for a long weekend.

Ladew is wonderful, but notably missing from the list is Longwood Gardens, which is about the best I've seen anywhere.
ReplyDeletethis is so beautiful! the third picture reminded me of cake...time to eat lunch.
ReplyDeleteThis is gorgeous. I had no idea it even existed. Will definitely need to visit. Thanks for sharing!

What a place! I will have to see this one day soon! Absolutely amazing!
ReplyDeletenever heard of Ladew. I will check it out.
ReplyDeleteI was struck by the brick arch == did not notice a traditional keystone however the H H H H pattern jumped out to my eye. upon a google search, Ladew's first name is H arvey could this explain the H pattern in the brick work?
ReplyDeleteAnon@12:03... very good eye! i never noticed that, but then there's so much to notice at the gardens! but that could be why it's not a traditional arch pattern. there's a great book about harvey ladew if you can find it. maybe alibris has it.
ReplyDeleteWhen you wrote about Ladew Gardens last year I was just about to leave to visit Balti and my brother and family. The day after I arrived we spent a lovely time touring the house and grounds at Ladew and I will always remember it as one of the loveliest gardens I've seen. As someone else mentioned, Longwood Gardens are also wonderful on a much larger scale.
ReplyDeleteThank you for highlighting so many of the wonderful aspects of Baltimore and area.
This will be the first year in decades that I have not visited in the first week of May. Going to Colorado this year!
Great topiaries!
ReplyDeleteI adore the "toppling topiary" - gardeners have great senses of humor!
