Today on One King’s Lane… 20 clothespins for $45.00!
The copy reads: The 20 clothespins in this set come in a variety of styles; some have metal clips for hanging photos in the darkroom.
I fully realize that this is the Brimfield Container, curated by Peter Dunham, but is any one really stupid enough to buy old clothespins for $2.25 apiece? There’s not even any provenance attached to them. It’s insulting.
I have to agree on the clothespins, but there were a lot of other things in the sale that looked pretty darn reasonable. Some really unique and very cool things. The other day, I can't remember who's sales I was looking at, but one sale was great! Beautiful exotic stuff for really good prices....then I went to the next sale (same day) and things were grossly overpriced....the first sale things were snapped up immediately....the next sale...not so much. It was interesting.
ReplyDeleteKatie... I totally agree! A friend who has an architectural antiques & salvage company and I were looking at this sale together, and she's been to Brimfield a dozen times. She agreed that there were some very well-priced items.
ReplyDeleteBut we both think that clothespins with no provenance for this price is out of the realm of reality! If they came from some famous photographer's studio, I could see it... There were also some plain clothespins that were outrageous, too!
As I've said in the past, I do buy things from OKL, and have been pleased with what I've gotten.
I purchased a doormate from Nate's India container sale on OKL for $25. No kidding but just a couple of days after receiving the matt I saw identical one in World market for $11. I felt sooooo badly not because it was cheaper at World Market but because I thought I was buying something "special" at OKL. Apparently OKL and World Market have the same Indian sources with one big difference: PRICES!!!!
ReplyDeleteI have ordered a few things in the past few months and every single one of them without exception was messed up. The last time I was so fed up that I decided to leave a comment on their Facebook page saying: 3 orders in the last few months all messed up. ..
ReplyDeleteIt took only a couple of minutes and my comment was deleted. Well, I felt that they should responded to it: We are sorry for your bad experience - something like that.
More interestingly 99% of the legit retailers have comments section why OKL doesnt? I suspect that lots of orders are not fullfilled the way they should be. .. And OKL is too afraid of The Customer.
I laughed as soon as I saw your post! I thought the sme thing when I saw the sale, there are so many things on OKL that the prices are in left field. Sometime ago they had a vintage book sale and I was reminded while looking about a previous comment if yours, every book I looked up could be had on Amazon, ebay and a book autction site for at least half the price.
ReplyDeleteI hope Connor is doing well after his adventure.
This is hilarious :)
ReplyDeleteI want to Thank you for your comment and link to a site to get a sea bag made... just what I was looking for!!
Thanks a million. You are a PEACH
xo
I have some hanging on my clothesline right now that, most assuredly, have a lovely weathered patina. What do you suppose I could get for them? Ridiculous! But here's the thing: OKL only outs stuff that up because they have experience with something just as ridiculous having been purchased at some lunatic price! I think $2.25 will get a pakc of 40 at Target!
ReplyDeleteI have some clothespins that were owned by a hobby photographer that is a published poet and ancestor of Charles Willson Peale. Wonder how much they are worth? Hahahahaha.
ReplyDeleteI once saw a mirror top tray table with fretwork in white for $250 on salel on OKL and then later purchased it online from kmart for $69!! Same exact table. Felt sooo gooood! LOL
ReplyDeleteHaving said that, I still do buy things from OKL if I feel they are a good deal. Twice now things have come shattered in the box....they don't pack ceramics well enough.
Too funny. They have some good deals but unless I can confirm the price from another source I would stay away. I purchased some time ago placematts (2 sets 24 matts alltogether). The pictures and descriptions on OKL were promising and the price was ridiculous. Well, they say you get what you pay for: The so called placematts were laminated regular paper. There is no way I would serve any guests on those unless the guests are 5 years old. :((((((
ReplyDeleteGreat post.
Don't like how long it takes to have items delivered. More like a month and a half from placing an order. They have sent me wrong items, wrong quantities and no delivery at all. Made me feel better after giving me OKL credit. So customer service is not that bad after all.
ReplyDeleteHello hardware store. I had friends buy me Katherine Graham's Dior clothes hangers at an estate sale. And they were NOT overpriced.
ReplyDeleteOh I am so with you, Meg. I love Peter Dunham and some of the items were cool - nothing I don't see when I am out antiquing, though - but the clothespins cracked me up. It's almost like someone said "Hey let's see just how stupid for Peter Dunham these people are?!!" Give me a break. Oh well - wonder if some poor sucker bought them? Hi to Conner!
ReplyDeleteI gave OKL up a while ago!
ReplyDeletePS: I am the dowager as well....
HAHA!
I agree, I agree: saw these and couldn't believe my eyes!
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand: I had some plates sent from OKL to my daughter, as a present. They arrived today. Extra special yellow box inside and one of their candles in a tin (and yes, these are some of the best scented candles around!) came with the plates as a freebie.
About equals out I guess!
....Fool me twice shame on me...
ReplyDeleteOKL isn't a patch on First Dibs!! However, there are times when I think about those old clothes pins and they don't make 'em like that anymore, which is the appeal I suppose.
ReplyDeleteLOVE your blog.
I love the interesting items on Old King's Lane, but some of the pricing schemes are absurd! Imagine my surprise once at finding a sculpture I'd purchased for $30 being resold on OKL for $500!!!! I appreciate the variety they bring to online shopping, but their "antiques" need provenance and better pictures.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean! One designer had a set of 1950's trays from Japan for $645 or something. You can get these trays for less than twenty dollars at any crappy thrift shop in Florida. We know what the seller's are thinking, but what are we thinking even considering buying things from them. I am not going to look on their site AnyMore.
ReplyDeleteThis is why I love reading your blog! I used to get an email everyday from OKL. Guess I'm not misssing too much, except th laughs!
