To me, hydrangeas are emblematic of summer. And this year, the hydrangeas seem to be particularly gorgeous and showy.
This is a lovely bush on Woodbourne’s campus. As I drove home, I spotted this house with hydrangeas all along the front and side walls. Here’s a great bush of massive white hydrangeas. Even though I like the blue ones best, I’d still take some pink ones. This bush has some pink and some blue – even in the same flower-head. As I took Connor on his evening walk, I spotted some in my new neighbourhood. And here. Along with this old out-house! And the great water-tower.What is the thing that says summer to you?
Fireflies!
ReplyDeleteCrabcakes (and chardonay)!
ReplyDeleteThe beach, a good barbeques, and seeing old friends! Love the hydrangea. Hope the unpacking is coming along, it always seems to take forever.
ReplyDeleteHot days, cooler nights, flowers abound, poolside reading, family barbeques, a getaway to the lake.
ReplyDeleteHydrangeas are my favorite!

For sure relaxing on deck while sailing on the Chesapeake or simply taking the pontoon out on the river or lake. Afterwards, the crabs and beer!

ReplyDeleteMy thoughts exactly!
We have year 'round summer in these parts it seems, it's the couple of weeks of "winter" that passes through so swiftly that I love the most.
Meg,
ReplyDeleteCouldn't agree more, hydrangea's do mean summer and I love them so much!!! It's really hard to imagine not seeing all that beautiful blue each year. I have this one neighbor who said he "hates" them...funny how they also happen to have some very sorry landscaping...year round!
Thanks for all the fabulous photos!!!
My sister just sent me a picture of the hydrangeas at our Jarrettsville house. Love them so much!
ReplyDeleteHydrangeas, clams on the half shell, tomato and mozzarella with home-grown basil leaves drizzled in olive oil and sprinkled with salt and pepper, home brewed iced tea with mint from the garden, walking in Port Jefferson, tiki torches around the patio...
ReplyDeletePEACHES!!!! Yes, I'm shouting that! Green ones for chutney, ripe ones for cobblers, sliced ones in the morning yoghurt, and the lush lush scent. Almost time now...
ReplyDeletewhat is the secret to such a spectacular display? Is it a particular type, Nikko Blue?? What is in your posters yard and what helps to bring on the blooms? Do tell, please and thank you
ReplyDeleteEating tomatoes right off the vine after being in the sun all day so the tomato is still warm from the sun, in mid-July at the height of tomato-picking season. Cold watermelon & kids' seed-spitting contests. The pool. Bumblebees. Fireflies. Butterflies on Buddleia. Sundresses. Geraniums. Long, long days with sunshine lasting until 9 pm. Lemonade. Hotdogs. Sand. Beach toys and umbrella. Suntan lotion. The smell of freshcut grass. Open windows to let the night's cool breezes in. Front porches. Wicker and rattan.
ReplyDeleteMany of my favorite things in life are from the summer....Divine.

Love everyone's ideas here! I'd add trips to the beach myself.
ReplyDeleteI have some beautiful blue & purple mottled hydrangeas from a friends garden on my desk at work now -I just love them. they're 2 days and counting too -usually they die in a day.
Meg, as I'm certain you are aware, the color, pink of blue is an indication of soil acidity. Blue acidic, pink, not so much. Summer to me is screen doors slamming and honeysuckle.
ReplyDeleteI am nuts for hydrangeas! Especially the deep lavender-blue ones. I planted a small one in our yard last year, and it's grown to huge proportions.
ReplyDeleteHaven't read all the comments, so forgive me if I'm repeating info, but you can make them go blue by adding aluminum sulfate to the soil. Easily available at nurseries and perfectly safe.
Bet you will have your own summer show next year. Hydrangeas mean summer to almost everyone.I have a bush that has both blue and pink and we are all enjoying. Happy summer to you and Connor.
ReplyDeleteSummer is having the windows open on the cooler nights and being sung to sleep by the crickets! Then waking up in the morning and sitting on my screened-in porch with my coffee and newspaper and watching the humming birds buzz to the feeder! AAHHH
ReplyDeleteice cream cones in the street..
ReplyDeleteSummer is cicadas singing. One of the most glorious sounds in the world, almost makes me weep.
