Ten Pillows?

I was reading an article about Barclay Butera in the New York Times today and he says that people should have ten pillows on their beds! Here's the list of which ones you should have:

  • Three euro-style pillows, either 30x30 or 26x26
  • Four king- or queen-size pillows, depending on the size of the bed
  • Two 18x18 or other decorative pillows
  • One small boudior pillow

To see his interactive pillow suggestion list, click here.

How many do you use? I have four, which I rotate when I change my sheets. Some are softer, some are firmer. Do you think that ten is too many pillows?

  1. I am crazy about pillows and have a minimum of six on each bed, presuming it is a double bed. Always 4 rectangular pillows and two large Squares and sometimes two smaller decorative ones on top - of course they get thrown everywhere but they are are very inviting o look at and comfy to snuggle into when reading. xv

  2. I guess it depends on the size of your bed. I have five pillows and use each and every one. Two small contour memory foam, 2 down and feather, and one all down. Everything gets thrown on the floor when the tv is turned off except the two small Tempurpedic memory foams. I have others that I don't use...Five is plenty.

  3. I have four pillows on my bed and sometimes I think that's too many. I can't imagine having ten pillows on my bed. This is a horrible analogy, but I'd feel like Ben Stiller in "Along Came Polly." I'd be able to calculate how many minutes of my life I wasted by dealing with throw pillows.

  4. Ten? Really?!?! I suppose the removal at night and the replacement in the morning could take the place of part of one's work-out routine. Two birds and all that.

I must admit I have 6. The two we actually sleep on, two euro sized pillows that hide the ones we sleep on, and a couple of smaller pillows in front for fun and back support when lyong around reading.

If I had anymore, there would be no more room left to sit!

  5. I think 10 pillows is insane. I use 2 to sleep and have 4 for reading, etc. that get put on the floor. I mean -how could you possibly ever use 10 pillows?

  6. correction - i have 4 TOTAL - 2 additional 'reading' pillows.

  7. I have four total. That's quite enough, I think.

  8. Close, I have nine. Six normal down ones and three decorative. Katie is right though..the on again, off again ritual is well, what it is...no comment...I'll live longer.

Have you seen his new book? Very Ralph Laurenish...in my opinion.

  9. Ridiculous. Completely and totally ridiculous.

  10. 10 is complete madness. I have 5, only 2-3 of which stay on the bed for sleeping. If I had to take off and put on 7 extra pillows a day I think I'd have to give up something else, like breakfast...

  13. Definitely not "necessary". Rather conspicuous consumption. They wouldn't even fit on my bed. I find two standard for myself, and a decorative one or two that I was unable to resist and spend most of their time in a pile on a chair, more than enough. For me, quality is much more the issue. However if you have lots of space on a monster king size, and at least two people, maybe ten would seem more useful.

  14. I have 11! 4 that we sleep with the others decorative. They go on the floor at night and back on in the morning. What can I say, I like the way they look...and I guess I get my exercise.

  15. One needs to define "pillows". "Decorative" seems to indicate "cushions" to me, but pillows are the rectangular ones with (usually white) bedding coverage that would match the sheets etc. Two each are quite enough of the ones you actuallu use to sleep on/with. The decorative variety are a pain to remove and replace each night and morning. But there's no accounting for taste!

  16. OMG I read this in The Times this morning and laughed so hard!
I think one of my ex husbands left me because I used too many pillows, and took to wearing ballerina flats.

  17. When I read your post I thought 10 was just simply outrageous. I thought how could you and why would you want 10 pillows on the bed. But then I took a second to count how many I have. I have 9! Ha. But you would never know it. I have a queen bed so 4 are pillows that we sleep on. We sleep on really flat pillows so the 4 really look like 2! Then there are 2 pillows to hide those we sleep on and 3 decorative pillows.

  18. too much work - 2 pillows (one for each head) and one for decoration

  19. I can't wait to read his article!

In 2007, Domino did a survey on decorative pillows, and most designers were very down on them. I did a post on it - http://freshpalette.blogspot.com/2007/10/decorative-bed-pillows.html

I currently have 7 pillows, pared down from 10! My husband gave me so much grief that I eliminated 3 pillows. Now I have 2 for sleeping, 2 king sham, 2 standard sham, and a decorative boudoir.

I got a new headboard in the fall, and am going to order new bedding as soon as I can figure out what to do. I want to streamline the pillow situation.

  20. Marnie... i assume someone's sleeping with you and that you don't have two heads! ;-)

  21. I used to be heavy on the pillows until I figured how much time it took twice a day to take them on and off...now I just have a long neck roll that runs the span of the headboard and I keep a pillow to sleep on in the closet. Maybe Barclay was actually sleeping on the pillows, head-to-toe mattress style and not reserving one just for his head - ten seems a bit much. However, you have too figure that most designers are making a cut on every pillow they sell, so that could be part of it??

  22. six!!! - not bad, but one is really worth 3 - it's huge and goes from end to end, heheh!!!

  23. i read that and thought "ridiculous"! but then i thought some more, and realized that 10 is not entirely crazy. 4 for sleeping are a must, and i like 2 euros in front to hide the regular pillows (3 on a king), so we are up to 7 on a king, and i sometimes like to put a decorative pillow or two in front of the euros, so i could be up to 9 on a king.

funny, i always think of myself as a simple bedding kind of guy but 9 pillows ain't so simple, is it?

  24. Two down pillows for sleeping, two square Europeans, and another one in front cnter for decor.

  25. Two for me, two for Mrs., and two extra in case the boy has a bad dream and decides to join us.

  26. You know I love pillows but 10 is a lot unless you have a daily housekeeper who is going to make your bed for you. I do make that many for clients if they like that style but for myself I prefer 6 or 8 max. and I forgo the Euro shams. They just end up on the floor!

  27. Since I make pillows... My house guests would ask me if I had enough pillows on the bed! I like to have between 5 - 7 on the bed & sofas are an entirely different story!

  28. Definitely not ten.... where to place them all when it is time to get cozy under the covers? On the floor? Piled on a chair? No room to walk or for personal items. Sleeping and reading should be the purpose of pillows on a bed, not certainly not just decorative embellishment.

  29. I'm with Anon 10:24. I thought it sounded ridiculous too, but I've got 4 standards (only sleep on one), two euros, two boudoirs, and a little travel pillow. Somehow though it doesn't look like too much. And, you don't see the four standards behind the Euros.

  30. Ten pillows? Wow, I only have four ordinary pillows and two additional pillows with shams for day. Wouldn't ten give you neck pain?

  31. On our shared bed we have 6 - 4 rather lumpy polyester-stuffed pillows and two down pillows. I am particular about my sleeping pillow, so I bought 2 of the same kind so that I know I'd get at least ONE of them, or be able to guilt-trip my spouse into giving one up if he has both.

The lumpy pillows make a good foundation for reading in bed, while the down pillows are the sleeping pillow. No throw pillows, those just get in the way.

Ten? they would end up on the floor!

  32. Yes, 10 is 6 too many in my opinion. That's a lot of pillow arranging each morning!

  33. Evidentely, I'm crazy. We have a king sized bed for my hub and myself. I sleep with six pillows-four down under head, and a bolster on each side to keep me from rolling over (anti-aging?). I also have a small pillow nearby to throw over my ears when the he starts to snore. When we go out of town, I'm useless without my pillows. Decoratively, (I work in design) I like three king size in the back row, four average size for the next row and various throws in front. That's a bit more than ten...but never that many on a smaller bed! K

  34. I, too, thought 10 was crazy until I counted 9 on my bed. I prefer the reg. size down pillows for sleeping on, so have 6 of those, stacked 2 high across the top of the king bed, then 2 large euro pillows in front of those, and 1 smaller bolster across the front of that. Always thought of myself as not too big on pillows! Ha!
I must add my husband requires 5 pillows for sleeping, and I use one. I actually use the euro for propping in bed reading, so only 2 pillows are purely decorative.
