House Hunting {No, Not Me!}

I was driving to The Book Thing on Sunday and noticed a “For Sale” sign in front of a house that I’ve always loved. It must have just been placed five minutes before, because the house was not yet listed on the realtor’s site. imageThis is what it looked like as it was being constructed in 1913. It’s still remarkably similar today, although with much more surrounding it.imageIt looks like some of these pictures were taken recently because the hydrangeas are at their peak!imageI could do without the fountain, or at least paint it a less garish colour, and I do love the row of windows!image

It looks as though a lot of the interior detail is still intact. imageI know it was broken up into flats for a number of years and I had a friend who lived just above the front “porch” on the top floor.imageThere is lots of stained glass in the house, and it looks to be original.imageI can’t quite figure out where this room is located.imageThe current owners have certainly kept the Victorian-era look and furnishings that would have originally gone into a house like this. imageI would guess that the floors are original, judging by the detail in the corner. And it’s clear that they’re still using the radiator heat, and the listing says that there’s no central air! {just shoot me now!}

It fascinates me that they’ve got a big old vegetable garden out back. imageUnfortunately, there’s also a convalescent hospital located immediately behind this house.

Any guesses what this house is on the market for? No peeking!

  1. My guess is 885K . I promise I did not peek and I am quite sure that is low. BTW when you buy it, may I visit for a weekend?!
    PS I'll have a look now to see what's what.

  3. What a house,that two storey portico ? is eye catching isnt it? I sent a good will message to your previous blog, I'm not sure what happened, I couldn't see it or more importantly your reply. I love that you always respond to us. I can't wait to hear what is next for you. BTW Black Caviar won at Ascot, by a nose hair. I've no idea of house prices in Baltimore $2million? Sydney prices are so ridiculous my view is probably very skewed.

    1. I saw you'd commented yesterday, but it never got posted. Strange.

      I saw the Black Caviar race - seems she had pulled muscles in her back? Sad.

      This house is about to go into foreclosure, so it's cheap!

    2. Yes, poor Black Caviar, I believe it has finally been determined it's her quadriceps only, not the back as well. I hate seeing horses get hurt. BC is coming home to her stable mates, a goat named Billy and Andy a 29 year old ! Shetland pony. She met her Majesty anad I saw some nice photos of that occasion.

      House is cheap mmmmmmm. 300k?

    3. silly mistake re price I've just seen your reply to Peggy, can you imagine what it would cost to put A/C in?

    4. $799,000...significantly less than the $1 million they paid a few years ago.

  4. I don't think the list price will be much for the size and condition of the house but those Baltimore City taxes will make up for it!

  5. The photo that you can't place is the room on the southwest corner of the house with the large grouping of windows overlooking the garden. You can see it here.

  6. What a marvelous house! It must be in my old neighborhood, Idlewood (just kidding, just kidding). Wouldn't it have been great fun to have been Old Baltimore Rich, living in a house like this, properly furnished, kept by a staff including a driver for the Cadillac, membership in the Maryland Club, kids at Gilman, dinner with H. L. Mencken . . .

    Thanks again for your great blog! - David in Raleigh

  7. If the house is in foreclosure it is probably around 600-700K...no central air in Baltimore! uck. xxpeggybraswelldesign.com

    1. A little higher! And no a/c? That would be such a deal breaker for me.

  8. Gorgeous--but Victorian is not my taste. Very sad that such a beauty is in foreclosure. M.

  9. Hi - This is my first visit. Found you through Pinterest when you commented on a pin. Thank you for the recommendation on Ladew. I will visit soon, and hopefully, blog about it. That is quite a mansion listed for sale! W-O-W! It is an architectural gem. And, I'd put a row of tall cryptomeria trees to block that hospital. Maybe a fence first, and then the row of trees.
    Cheers from DC,

  10. I just had to pick myself up off the floor after seeing that gorgeous window in the "unknown" room. And that was quite embarrassing because I'm in Starbucks right now. Love your blog.

  11. It's just beautiful but unfortunately so many that can aford it want new. Could it be used as a restuarant? A nursing home in the back yard...hmmmm sounds like Houston's zoning. No wait.if it were in Houston the house would have been torn down years ago.
    I was going to guess 1.5 mil.
