I was wasting some time over at my friend, Maxminimus’ Tumblr page and spotted a link to this monstrosity in the comments. Yes, you read that right. It’s a navy peacoat cape! For men. Men who wear hard soled shoes with bright yellow shorts. Men who should not be spending $895 on something that is so completely idiotic that it looks like a 1900’s nurse’s cape. What’s even worse is that it’s for sale at the venerable clothiers, Brooks Brothers. They’ve obviously lost the plot. I am not sure what I’d do, besides laugh out loud, if I saw someone walking down the street wearing this. Thoughts?

While I certainly won't be buying one, I'm actually glad that Brooks Brothers is branching out into more high-fashion territory. This is one of those "directional" pieces that will have influence beyond its actual sales.
ReplyDeleteI think it can't be a bad thing if tailoring becomes a bigger trend than, say, cargo shorts. I'm already excited that regular men's swim trunks are making a comeback in place of those sloppy, baggy board shorts. It's all part of the same trend, I think.
I could not agree with you more, it is ugly. I personally love and appreciate fashion, good tailoring, and qualiy clothing. But I am not in favor of clothing that makes people look like clowns.
ReplyDeletePerhaps this is a new line of couture for Brooks Brothers?
Have a great night, Elizabeth
It is just wrong in so many ways.
ReplyDeleteOh God bet I'll see some version in Georgetown.
ReplyDeleteI'm kind of embarrassed for BB.

I find the shorts and shoes so much more troubling than the cape.
ReplyDeleteThe cape, you could imagine you are a super hero. Disguised as a sailor. And rescue people, or cats, or something. The shorts/shoes combination, you just can't even pretend those away.
All I can say is Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha.
ReplyDeleteLove a cape, love a pea coat... together... not so great... WIsh I had the legs to wear those shorts!!! xv
ReplyDeleteI saw this...how horrible is this I thought. Stunned. Thought someone has slipped a mickey in my lunch time drink before heading into BB. TDC is so correct.
ReplyDeleteI'll go with Vicki Archer's comment....is it possible that over a tailored suit, the cape might look a little better? Just a thought. Mary
ReplyDeleteI think that what they combined the cape with makes it look even more ludicrous!
ReplyDeleteThe cape is ludicrious.
ReplyDeleteHowever, Bermudian men wear shorts and hard-soled shoes - though never lace-ups with no socks - has to be loafers.
The cape itself is a bit odd, but would look much better on someone NOT wearing ridiculous yellow shorts.
ReplyDeleteThe price is beyond stupid, even if the buttons were made of solid gold.
The ad is obviously aimed at people with so much money they just don't care any more.
At least he is wearing it with a straight face!!
ReplyDeleteThat would be a big No. It reminds me of Elaine's "urban sombrero" if you remember that episode of Seinfeld.
ReplyDeleteI surely wouldn't wear it but I have to admire the man who does! Let your freak flag (har hard) wave!
ReplyDeleteAn excellent example of trying way to hard to "stand out from the crowd"!
ReplyDeleteNo, please no.

ReplyDeleteMy feelings about this brings to my grandmother's exprexxion- "Wouldn't wear something like that to a cat fight (or skunk rassle)"
ReplyDeleteIt's never a waste of time to go to my blogs. Looky at what all y'all learned as a result.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a parody of something fashionable and useful.
ReplyDeleteHorrible mess this.
Hugs to Connor.
Hasn't anybody noticed the pith helmet yet?
ReplyDeleteThe lady looks a lot nicer in hers, not to mention her entire outfit :-).
