I was running errands today at lunch and saw this fabulous car parked on the side of the road. I did a quick u-turn and pulled over to take some pictures, hoping that the owner would appear. Now, you have to understand that the high temperature today hovered somewhere around 35*F, and so driving along in an open car like this one would require me to have a lovely fur driving rug… oh, that’s right, I just got one! I thought this was an old MG, but the badge on the front said MP. Any explanations? Regardless of what this is, I’ll take it! Would you?

Looks almost like a Morgan, but the "MP" wouldn't work.
ReplyDeleteThe MP Lafer was an automobile built in Brazil by Lafer S/A beginning in 1974. It is fiberglass body with mostly a VW Beetle as the rest of it - As per wikipedia
ReplyDeleteThat car needs an invite to our Golf and Auto Classic this Summer!
ReplyDeleteTracey.. i tried to stalk the car and find out the owner to no avail.
ReplyDeleteLooks a lot like my friend's Morgan. Classic British look, isn't it, but yes, a bit brisk these days for it.
ReplyDeleteI use to have a MG TD which I bought back in the mid 60's for $400.it was in much better shape. The thing with British cars nowadays, it is hard to find parts for them. Also, they are know to have lots of electrical problems.
ReplyDeleteThe one pictured is definitely a kit car as the back lights are wrong.
Anon@12:04... My dad had a Morris Oxford, made by the same people who made MG. He had to give it up because he couldn't get parts and it was prohibitive to have them shipped over. The car was made specifically for him with left-hand drive.
ReplyDeleteSigh!
ReplyDeleteSweet little racker!
My first car was a MG with wooden dashboard and panels, an ivory choke, leather seats. The engine was for zip and my father and brother rebuilt it four times, but the bodywork? Total charm. My friends named the car "John" for reason long forgotten. Seeing this car made me miss John.

ReplyDeleteIn truth, that is NOT a kit car. Lafers were factory-built in Sao Paolo from 1974 to 1989, during a period when Brazilian tax and import restrictions kept most foreign cars out. It does have a Type 1 VW chassis, engine and transmission, but there are a few real MG parts on it (the tail lamps, for example, are from an early-1960s MGB). Fewer than 5,000 were made, most in the original MP version, although a slightly sleeker -- but still vintage -- TI (for International Touring) model is also out there. Both versions, by the way, have tempered glass side windows instead of the canvas-and-plastic side curtains that plagued MG T-series drivers. I've owned a TI for almost seven years now, and it's the most enjoyable car I've ever had or driven. Very reliable, with parts available everywhere. There's even a club for American owners. Well worth looking for if you're in the market for a fun, inexpensive ride.
