A Christmas Quiz

I’ve published this quiz a few times, but not since 2009. My answers have changed a little since then. image

1. Eggnog or hot chocolate? Now that I have the ultimate eggnog recipe, I actually like eggnog!

2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree? He wraps them in coordinated paper for different family members.

3. Colored lights on tree/house or white? White, non-flashing, non-moving.

4. Do you hang mistletoe? No. I am not tall enough

5. When do you put your decorations up? I hang lights and wreaths, but don’t decorate inside too much.

6. What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)? Cranberry and orange relish. Spiced pecans.

7. Favorite holiday memory as a child? Being old enough to go to the big caroling party downtown with my parents and their friends.

8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? What truth?

9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? We didn't used to, but we do some now.

10. How do you decorate your Christmas tree? Minimally. I have some lighted stars outside and some glittery garland on a big plant inside.

11. Snow: love it or hate it? Love it, as long as it doesn’t make things difficult on the road. Ice, though, is evil.

12. Can you ice skate? Yep. I used to ice skate after work at a rink overlooking Baltimore’s Inner Harbour.

13. Do you remember your favorite gift? A trip to the Costwolds for the entire family. It took two years of planning, but all 15 of us went for from two to six weeks.

14. What’s the most important thing about the holidays for you? The planning. Writing cards to friends scattered across the globe. Seeing family and friends at parties. The cheer and good will. This year, it's also making sure all of the kids at our residential centers have presents.

15. What is your favorite holiday dessert? Mince pie with a sharp cheddar cheese. Christmas cake from my English grandfather’s recipe.

16. What is your favorite holiday tradition? I never miss the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols from Kings College Cambridge that is played on Christmas Eve. I hope one day to attend in person. When the first boy starts to sing the solo, I just weep.

17. What tops your tree? No tree top.

18. Which do you prefer, giving or receiving? Giving... I love finding the perfect present. Our family picks names, and then we pick a letter. We all have to buy presents that begin with the same letter. It’s a challenge.

19. What is your favorite Christmas song? Some of the old English/Latin carols like Personent Hodie, Rui Rui Chiu or Gaudete or long-time favourite, O Come O Come Emmanuel. image

20. Candy canes: Only red and white peppermint ones.

21. Favorite Christmas movie? Don't have one, although I love watching the Nutcracker ballet.

22. What do you leave for Santa? Whatever I leave out, dog usually snags before Santa comes!

What are your answers???

  1. This was fun. Here are some of my answers:

    Eggnog or hot chocolate? Champagne

Colored lights on tree/house or white? Some year's white, some year's colored. I am ecumenical on this.

When do you put your decorations up? After December 16, so my daughter can have her birthday un-Christmased.

Favorite holiday memory as a child? Going into Richmond to see the extensive lights across the streets (this was the pre-green sixties) and Santa Claus.

Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? One gift each

Snow: love it or hate it? Love it if my daughters are already home, but hate hearing my husband complain about it.

Do you remember your favorite gift? My baby daughter, who was polite enough to come 9 days before Christmas.

What is your favorite Christmas song? I'm with you on "Oh come, oh come Emanuel"

Candy canes: This year I found some lovely organic, cane sugar/brown rice syrup ones on Amazon (by Tru-sweets), which are a nice, rather vintage-y pinkish red and white.

Have a great Christmas and happy New Year!

  3. Holiday a word derived from the term High Holy Day perhaps. If a family has children the cycle starts I suppose unless one embraces the season to observe the meaning observe or engage in the meaning goodwill toward man. I do not intentionally purchase new items to if I find an interesting piece at a tag sale when some one is divesting themselves of their holiday decoration cache so be it. One needs to be sincere in their efforts one needs to be respectful --tis the season to be jolly. The opportunity to celebrate en mass smiles are contagious. I work for an organization that helps spread good will er we help santa letters get to a secret santa. If you really want to brighten a childs world consider visiting your local post office and with the help of the postmaster find a letter to send a gift to a child that believes.

  4. I agree this was fun! Here are some of my answers:

    1. Wine!
    3. White only! NO twinkling or colored or heaven forbid LED.
    6. Carrot souffle
    7. Fetching my Grandmother at the bus station. She was always my favorite gift.
    11. Love snow
    12. I taught myself to figure skate at age 37--one of my favorite activities.
    13. Best gift ever was unintentional--my Border Collie Nick. Came to our house as a foster on December 15 and never left.
    17. Tree topper is an old LL Bean thing that we call "The Happy Woodsman". He wears a little plaid shirt and has bushy white hair and beard--everyone thinks he's Santa, but it's really a lumberjack. He needs a little ax. It's bizarre and awesome at the same time.
    18. Gifting! I can't sleep on Christmas Eve because I'm so excited to give gifts the next day.
    19. The entire Nutcracker Suite
    21. Love Actually. Nothing else compares.
