Turgot Plan de Paris (1734)

I am back at the office after a few days off and when I got in this morning, there were a couple of fun things waiting for me. The first was my Michel-Etienne Turgot 1734 Plan de Paris which I wrote about here. I first found out about this map from fellow blogger, The Columnist. He has since told me that he ordered it as well.
Before I decided to order it though, I went to one of the on-line digital copies and dowloaded the sections of the map. Through my wizard Photoshop skills, I was able to re-size all of the pages to make them mesh together. If you'd like a digital copy, which works out to about 44 x 34 inches, e-mail me and I will upload a copy to you either as a PDF or a JPG and in either sepia or grayscale.
The folio version I bought was purchased through CSN World Globes for $60 with free shipping. Each of the 25 sheets measures 19.5" x 13.5" for a finished size of 98.5" x 63". The detail on each page is incredible. The colour isn't quite sepia-toned, but it's not black and white, either. I will probably scan these sheets and have some fun with them! The other fun thing I found when I got back to my office? A large-format printer!

  1. You are so clever! I have been wanting this since you first posted about it and now I think i should just order it!!! I gather from what you said that the folio pages do NOT mesh together...is this the case?? Thank you for tracking this down. I think it could be used for oh so many things.....xo Michelle

  2. Pavlova... the folio pages are perfect. The ones I printed off from the sections I found on the web didn't quite mesh. I corrected them through photoshop though.

  3. I like the last sheet a lot. Would it be awful of me to want to color in some of the buildings?

  4. Kathleen... I mentioned doing that in the original post. We had some black & white line drawing wall paper in a tiny loo at the house where I grew up. I itched to take some coloured pencils to it and make it a little more interesting.

  5. I have wanted that map since I saw it in Southern Accents and would absolutely love a copy of it in Sepia as a jpg. I emailed you my request as well.

Thank you so much for your generous offer as well as your delightful blog!

  8. Meg - just back from the copy shop and they are printing six sections together from your first file sent to me, (the black & white), and I'm going to use it as a window covering in the guest loo - which is black and white. There was quite a lot of fiddling to do, as they don't match exactly, and when printed up to my size, (enlarged) they may lose their precision, but it might have an unexpected modern art effect, and I like the juxtaposition of the C18th map made into something more modern. It will be ready on Monday, and I will post about it, with a reference to you/your post. I hope my endeavours are not a disaster!!
