Miles Redd’s Bathroom

About a month ago, I did a little post about Miles Redd’s apartment being featured in New York Social Diary. One of the pictures I showed was of his incredible bathroom. It’s huge and it’s like a hall of mirrors.NYSD Redd4

Yesterday, my friend Tracey, who’s one of the two owners of Housewerks Salvage, about which I have often written, left a comment about the bathroom. The two owners of Housewerks, are both graced with an excellent eye for amazing pieces, which can be found in their Victorian brick pumphouse building in Baltimore.

Here’s what Tracey said in her comment:

That was us!! Housewerks salvaged Miles’ mirrored bathroom in Chicago AND installed it in his house. It's even more amazing in person. One of the best things we ever salvaged.

NYSD Redd6 She wrote me a follow-up e-mail about the bathroom and mentioned that I should talk to her partner Ben about it. I stopped in today, but he was busy. NYSD Redd5

So, you’ll have to stay tuned for an interview with Ben about the incredible bathroom which was taken from David Adler’s Armour Estate in Chicago. The entire bathroom was found in a restoration yard and once featured in a Robert Altman movie.

  9. Stunning. And if it were mine, I'd be forced to be in the best shape of my life... So really, is it luxury or a necessity to prod yourself into a healthier lifestyle?

  14. I love Housewerks and the work they do -- a real Baltimore treasure -- but I just cannot get into this bathroom. Agree with the first commenter; can't imagine having to see myself in the altogether every time I stepped into the bathroom. (And what's with the zebra hoof lamp?? Eeek. Gives me the willies.)

  15. The story I heard was that Jim shearon of Bories & Shearon originally found the bathroom at Housewerks in chicago. He recognized it because he had been to the Armour house in Lake Bluff Illinois. He tried very hard to get either the Art Institute or the Historical Society in chicago to consider saving it and installing it like the Lavin bathroom in Paris. He couldn't any of the museums or any patrons in Chicago interested, they wouldn't even go look at it. Miles and jim are old friends so they were discussing the situation and Miles expressed an interest in wanting the bathroom for himself but Jim was determined to get it into a museum because of it perfect architectural provenance. Eventually it was sold to a bar owner but when Jim heard this he put Miles in touch with the purchaser and the rest has became decor history!

  16. Anon... That's interesting. I think the Chicago and Baltimore may be connected.

I will have to talk to Ben and get the story. He's been very involved in the salvage community in Chicago, as well as in Baltimore and DC.

  17. It's hard to believe that a place like the Art Institute didn't show any interest in this Chicago icon, but then it's hard to believe that they had already packed off to auction two Robert Adam doorcases & the stair hall of the so-called 'Hogarth House' that David Adler sent back from London, which installations in the old basements at the AIC when I was a kid were what first stirred my interest in the historic styles. At least the Armour room is in good hands now, thanks to JS & MR, and maybe the next time it moves, it will end up in a place that hasn't lost interest in period rooms. This dazzler would make a perfect conclusion to the Metroploitan's existing series of American rooms.

  19. I've heard a similar story to what Anon reported. Did anyone else hear that the owner who ripped the bathroom out of the Adler home was Richard Marx, that 1980s singer?? What a crime, but at least it has a good home...a very good home!

  21. YES! It was Richie Marks who gutted all of the baths and maybe some of the interior and then went on to add a huge ugly wing to an already rather large house. Everything Mr Marks has done to the house its grounds is a crime but he is not totally at fault. The house is in the Village of Lake Bluff Illinois and at the time they had no preservation ordinances which by the way was not that long ago... Lake Bluff has many fine houses that should be and should have in this case been protected! Shame on Lake Bluff.
