The New Colonial Williamsburg Colours

When I was in the north a few weeks ago, we had a fun Fawlty Towers-like lunch with some great friends of Reggie and Boy’s. The gentleman was from Wales, and had gone to university in Cardiff where I’d lived. As we were chatting, I learned that he’d recently done a shoot for Benjamin Moore Paints, and when he sent me the link for the images, I just gasped. imageThey are so, so beautiful that I want to get rid of everything I have and make my house look just like these images. Before I saw these images, I would have turned my nose up at Williamsburg paint colours, remembering all of the dull paint shades I’ve seen in too many images to count. image

But as they say, these aren’t your gran’s Williamsburg colours. They’ve been re-interpreted for the 21st century and have become contemporary. image

Of course, the styling, which I suspect was done by my new friend’s wife, really helps make the colours look fabulous, as I think you’ll agree. image

How could you not love every single thing about this room, from the wall colour to the Dorothy Draper style chest to the black and white coats of arms?image

I love the contemporary light and the traditional chairs. M_CW_FrontHall_1088_tr1

This is just a beautiful collection!image

Great job, John!

  2. Meg I need to paint the master and am so excited about this line.
Even the softer shades have a wonderful saturation.

  3. I am confused. .Is this gentleman a photographer? Certainly not a clerk in a paint store that knows how to match paint colors from a color sample. Color is color. if you like a certain brand..(they can match the color) JD powers ratings hmm not so much.

    1. Colour is not just colour. It's all in the formulas and the pigments. A paint store can't match the underlying shades which provide the paint's depth and nuances.

And yes, my friend was the photographer.

  4. I didn't know you lived in Cardiff, must have been quite the experience! Those paint colors are lovely, I like way your eyes rest when you see them. I like palace pearl on the ceiling a lot. As you probably know though, we don't get Benjamin Moore paints in the UK...

    1. Lived in London first and worked at King's College in The Strand. Then moved down to Cardiff and worked at Atlantic College.

Take consolation in the fact that you CAN get Farrow & Ball paints, and more great wallpaper than we'll ever see on our side of the pond!

  6. The colors are wonderful but it's the inspiring photographs that really sell! These are beautifully executed spaces with unexpected color combinations that have been artfully styled and extremely well photographed.

I never would have thought of these classic colors for modern spaces. Thanks for changing my mind.

  7. Meg, you are right, they are fab. But I always thought Williamsburg colours were fab anyway. The styling in the photos really makes it. The yellow and black room is Draperesque, as well as the following blue and white room. Lovely! Thanks for sharing.

  8. I adore Benjamin Moore paints and spec them for all of my clients. When someone one wants to use another brand, I buy them a BM paint deck.

  9. Spectrophotometer -- The House Beautiful web site says a spectrophotometer is used to match any color at the paint store. Color is color --- if your painter has an account at a non BM paint store the good painter is using a product he or she trusts right? Preparing the surfaces and proper paint application is part of the equation to be factored in.

  11. I just had to replace my BM fan deck--funny how such a thing would disappear with multiple workmen in the house but I'll try not to be bitter about it--and I noticed they had the Williamsburg fan deck. I wasn't sure they would be a fit for my Yankee homestead but I'm really loving the gray room with Bone Black and Lamp Black
