I am sure I am boring you rigid with this storm, but I am a total weather geek, mainly due to having sailed for so many years. I also used to take the water taxi to work and always had to be cognizant of the weather conditions before I left.
Here’s what the mid-Atlantic looked like on Thursday, June 28th, the day before the storm hit. Here’s the same satellite view on Saturday, June 30th.
Quite a difference, isn’t it?
I think that's a powerful image!
ReplyDeleteCan you see your house? HA!
DeleteWow!wheres Philly
ReplyDeleteI think Philly and Wilmington are under the clouds, but you can see a bit of the glow. I am not sure it hit that far north.
DeleteYep - I can see that the lights are out on my street in Silver Spring, MD. :). Amazing photos. I suspect that the area to the left of Washington that is fairly lit up with lights on Saturday night is upper Montgomery County where most of the power lines are underground. It was easier for Pepco to repair the blown transformers in the sub-stations than having to deal with all the down power lines in the lower parts of the county near DC.
ReplyDeleteHaha! The lane where my sister lives runs east-west. She's on the east end, which is served by BGE and got power back on Saturday! The people on the west end are served by PEPCO, and didn't have power until later in the week.
DeleteI have just heard the WORST things about PEPCO and then heard that they're asking to pass on the fine they had to pay for their last screw-up, Irene I think, to their rate payers.
In Arlington, we were out of power until Monday night. I know of some folks who are STILL out, mostly because the lines were ripped off the houses, so the repairs are more complicated. My fridge hasn't been this clean since it was new.
ReplyDeleteMy brother lives in Arlington, near "My Notting Hill" and they got their power back on Sunday.
DeleteOkay, those of you who are still without power are probably going to be annoyed with me, but when I saw those satellite images my first thought was -- I hope everyone goes out and looks at the stars before the power -- and lights -- go back on!
ReplyDeleteThe people that I talked to said it was creepy seeing everything to pitch black dark.
DeletePowerful(no pun intended)image. xxpeggybraswelldesign.com
ReplyDeleteHahaha!
DeleteMeg, you could write about penny nails, or Kleenex and it wouldn't be boring. I think you need to write a book. Ann
ReplyDeleteThanks! I'd love to do a book, just not sure what it would be about.
DeleteWe were out until Monday night, from your comment it was a bit after your brother's electric came on. Dan and the neighbors cut and cleared the fallen tree themselves so Dominion power could do the work. Waiting for Arlington County to clear the tree would have been futile... Luckily I missed it all as I was in Skaneateles NY.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your new job!
Their power came on at 1 on sunday afternoon. Bro said that they lost all the "bad" trees in the micro-burst last summer.
DeleteIt looks like Philadelphia got wiped out....wow!! Very interesting and informative, Meg.
ReplyDeleteI feel so bad for people without power and A/C. Hope this is not going to be a pattern every summer.
