Mrs. Strong Closing Confirmed
Take a look at the press release I received, and which An Aesthete's Lament has posted, about the closing of Mrs. John L. Strong. It's such a shame. Even though I posted about this almost a week ago, information about the closing has been in scant supply.
Outrageously sad. It makes me want to slap myself for eschewing notepaper in favour of email.
ReplyDeleteEven though I could not afford most of Mrs. Strong's offerings, I am still sad to see it go. Even the shopping bags were works of art.
ReplyDeleteI hate seeing quality businesses fold. I was talking to someone the other day about office supply shops...the little ones privately owned, and you could go in and buy "one" pencil or "one" file folder, if that's what you needed. They always remembered your tastes, they would special order for you. Every time a good business closes, a level of graciousness and civility goes with it.
ReplyDeleteI went to school in Vermont that had just such a privately owned stationary shop. I often stopped in for just "one" pen.
ReplyDeleteWC and Amanda... I agree 100%! I don't always want to buy a dozen pens. I will forget that I have them and then have to buy a dozen more the next time.
ReplyDeleteWhen I lived in the UK, there were still small stationers around and I loved going in and buying a nice cheapie fountain pen, or a small notebook.
holy cow, i cannot believe this.
ReplyDeleteWith the closing of Mrs. Strong, what other fine stationery brands do you favor? I've had a few fine paper stores die off here in Dallas, so I'm looking for some new options. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteYour blog is amazing and this was my first notification of the possibility of Mrs. John L. Strong's closing. I was heart broken... they designed my business cards approximately 15 years ago, which I have considered a work of art each time I look at them. Their standards and workmanship were the epitome of quality. My business cards have received constant compliments and speak of the enduring quality this art form represents. I am so very sad to see them go, but hope to promote this dying tradition with every chance I get. Does anyone know what intentions are for the dies - I'd love to attempt to retrieve mine but their voice mail is full, and there's no one to contact. Thanks for posting this news, though I hated to accept it !
ReplyDeleteAnon...Call Dempsey & Carroll in NYC. They're working with Mrs. Strong's former clients.
ReplyDeleteWallis, Duchess of Windsor, just did a roll in her casket.
ReplyDeleteI think this says more about our culture than a particular store.
Rob, KJ, Neiman-Marcus handles a full range of fine papers and Letterpress technique printing.
at the Downtown & NorthPark stores.
My design studio in New York actually designed the logo for Mrs Strong, the boxes and carry bags back in 2004.
ReplyDeleteI was and still am very proud of the timeless and sophisticated work I created for them.
I occasionally design stationery for private individuals who want the finest quality. Feel free to contact me at 212 226 2550.
