Labour Day

It's such fun having a "free" day like today. I got a lot done, starting with breakfast with my mother. We walked around her garden, going to pick some cucumbers and cherry tomatoes for a party this evening. Her neighbour has a green thumb, so I spent some time taking pictures inspired by Irving Penn's book on flowers.

This is an ageratum before it has bloomed.
I am always so curious to see the secret inner life of flowers, stamens and pistils, sepals and petals, filaments and anthers. Getting up close and personal with flowers reveals more of their true beauty. Here are pictures of three stages of a zinnia.
I stopped by the Whole Foods, and popped into Gore*Dean, which is right there. Unfortunately, they weren't open, but they have some huge stone, iron-work and wire pieces outside and I got some photos of them. I really liked this old bassinet, which would be great filled with flowers. One of the most impressive things is two ENORMOUS lions lounging outside the little pool at the entrance to the store.
All in all, a nice quiet day, getting a lot of things done. If you were off, what did you do?

  1. I got invited to an impromptu Labor Day party at some friends' house. They grilled chicken for about 15 of us. Looks like very few people left town this weekend!

  3. I visited a sick friend and brought her zinnias from the farm up the road - love them and your pics too - grew them for a while but I let the garden lie fallow this year - not enough time-
    I need another labor day

  4. How gorgeous! I love the statues. We had a fairly quite weekend attending a barbeque at a friend's house and taking a road trip to do some bourbon shopping.

  8. You were far more productive than were we! We did manage a playdate for our children, but as it came with a chilled bottle champagne on a very temperate day... It was sort of a playdate for all involved.

  10. I love that basket, I can just see it filled with luscious flowers. We snuck into a hotel with an AMAZING pool and drank strawberry daquiris all day

  11. Were the flower pictures taken with the "macro" setting? I'm learning how to use my camera from your photos (rather than reading my owner's manual)!

  12. We took Monday evening off. Today, Mrs. E. had to report for duty at school. It was the day that the students returned.

  13. Those lions are fantastic! I love the dog too. Sigh...Sacramento is playing catch-up with the antique market sadly. There are a few very nice places, but when I say "few" that is exactly what I mean. Hope you had a wonderful holiday!

  14. We went on a picnic with the dogs. Very much fun!

Your flower photos remind me of Georgia O'Keefe's paintings of them. Up close and really lovely.

  15. I think those are the same stone lions they had in front of their old store here in Gtown on M street, aren't they?? So beautiful! What a long way to move them!

  16. Be... I bet they from the M Street store! They have just recently arrived and I noticed that they are in two sections each. I can't imagine how heavy they are!

  17. Love that bassinet! Labor day was spent with teenage kids hanging out at my home... me hiding in my mini-studio painting... but constantly popping in for a visit.
