With the opening of the 2012 Olympics just a few short weeks from now, there was another Olympiad taking place in London this weekend – the Chap Olympiad!
Amongst the events in the Chap Olympiad are Butler Racing, ironing board surfing, where contestants mount their ironing boards and are carried over the finishing line by their butlers and housekeepers;umbrella jousting, where two chaps on bicycles approach each other along a boundary and use their brollies to knock each other off, protected by Bowler hats and reinforced copies of the Daily Telegraphand the shouting at foreigners event, where contestants must pit their gentlemanly skills against a curmudgeonly, uncooperative foreign shop assistant.
The Chap Olympiad describes itself as a celebration of eccentricity and athletic ineptitude with the emphasis on panache and style over sporting prowess. I am only sorry to have missed the trouser creasing event, but I am not sure that I could handle the excitement of it all!
Only the Brits.
