Awards Season Starts!

One of my besties always live-blogs the awards shows and critiques the dresses, but since she’s on the West Coast right now, and is at an event, I missed out on her comedic take on things.

I thought I’d run through some of the good and bad dresses at the Golden Globes, starting with the woman whose golden globes were just a little too exposed. I was terribly concerned that the double-sided tape would choose the wrong moment to unstick itself. Not to mention that the fabric wasn’t terribly attractive and there was just too much of it following her around.image

As always, George Clooney looks fabulous in a tuxedo, and his new wife Amal also looks terrific. I wish that her gloves fit a little better and weren’t so scrunched up. image

What is wrong with this woman? Lena Dunham is great friends with Zak Posen, but his dresses never work for her. The waistline on this dress needs some serious work. Is the fabric too stiff? Is the cut just wrong? It could have been a gorgeous dress.image

Helen Mirren always looks wonderful. Her dress is elegant and classic. image

Keira Knightly in Chanel. Love the butterflies, but pretty much hate everything else about it. Not flattering at all. image

I know that Rosamund Pike just had a baby, but it’s the top that is the problem, not the waistline. It looked like it needed to be hitched up about six inches to fit properly. image

It reminded me of Gwyneth’s Ralph Lauren disaster several many years ago.image

Colin Firth and his wife, Livia, always look terrific! Coordinated and elegant. image

There is no question that Reese Witherspoon knows how to dress. She always looks fabulous.image

I thought Kerry Washington’s dress was gorgeous until I saw the whole thing. image

I love that Lana Del Ray decided to channel Priscilla Presley, circa 1964! So mid-century modern!

And here’s Jessica Chastain in the 2015 version of the dress. image

Another man who knows how to dress… Benedict Cumberbatch and his wife, Sophie.image

Ruth Wilson in Prada. She looks distinctly unhappy. Is it what she’s wearing?image

Last but not least, this train wreck! It’s Tiziana Rocca (who???) and there’s an awful lot going on with this dress. Any one of the myriad elements would have been enough, but added together, they’re just too much.

Which dress did you like the most? The least?

  1. This year was probably one of the worst years for dresses on the globes red carpet. Not one of them was a real knock out and most of them dressed like all the stylists were on strike or something. Half the people look like they went on pinterest as inspiration and cut up their curtains and made it into a dress.

    1. Fire all the stylists! There were a high number of curtain dresses, weren't there!

  2. Well.......at least JLo was consistently bare!

    1. Just because you CAN wear it, doesn't mean you should!

  3. I thought Naomi Watts looked terrific. I loved the color of her dress. My sister put it best when she said that Jlo is getting a little too old to pull off those ultra low cut dresses!!

  4. I liked Robin Givhan's take in today's Washington Post. http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/lorde-amal-clooney-make-a-golden-globes-statement-its-okay-to-dress-like-a-grown-up/2015/01/11/a6cb0d9c-99dc-11e4-a7ee-526210d665b4_story.html?hpid=z2

  5. The exposed Golden Globes (very witty) lacked class and good taste. Are they plastic? There were some stunning dresses worn by women who get the elegance of simplicity. Helen Mirren can do no wrong, what a gorgeous woman.

    1. Agree about Helen Mirren. Always a class act. And did you notice the fountain pen clipped on with a kilt pin in solidarity with the cartoonists?

  7. Loved Naomi Watts (that shade of yellow is difficult for a Caucasian to wear), Julianne Moore, Reese. Why do women think it's ok to look whorey at these events? Oh yeah, it's Hollywood. Patricia Arquette looked awful, Mrs. Eddie Redmayne picked the drabbest color (swamp green), Amal's gloves looked pretentious.

  8. Meg there were many gorgeous looks; however as most of these women have stylists, they need to get someone new or look in the mirror several times before making a decision.

  9. Tiziana Rocca (whoever that is) was obviously going for worst dressed -no such thing as bad press!

  10. Julia Louis-Dreyfuss. And all the women in pants;).

  11. I totally agree with you about Jennifer Lopez. It looked like a costume, and just made her look cheap, in my opinion. She is a beautiful woman, but someone should tell her that a little sophistication would go a long way. Helen Mirren looked wonderful, as always, but my favorite was Julianne Moore. Generally, I'd have to say the women with more experience wore it best. Can you believe Jane Fonda (who looked fantastic) is 77 years old?

  12. Haha, fun post! Jennifer Lopez...good lord, she could do so much better than this, what a tired look - has she not done this same thing over and over? Helen Mirren looked great as usual. The McCarthy girl (not pictured here) - she pieced together a white blouse w/bow and a ruffled black skirt - it didn't work. Why in the world can she not seem to find a good stylist to help her? I just don't get it. I was thinking, if she would of left the neck line open (show some skin!) and had a more tailored black skirt in a better (more expensive) fabric -I think it could of been really good. I did read somewhere that she was very "difficult" for stylist to work with. Thanks for the post!
