I am still trying to figure out what to do with my downstairs bathroom, which is right off the mudroom. It gets the most use, and I’ve tried a couple of things, and think that I will end up wallpapering it. I was looking at some wallpapers from the UK, which seems to have a much broader range than in the US, and noticed a trend: Faux wallpapers.
Like this:
Tube station/subway tile paper
Scrapwood paper
Wrought Iron paper
“American” Stones paper
Porcelain plates paper
Brooklyn tin wallpaper
Picture Gallery paper
London Map paper, but it only comes in two sections, so you’d have to keep repeating. ugh.
Penguin Book Library paper
What do you think of this trend? Good or bad?
I believe that any photographs or designs can be custom-transferred to wallpaper, making for endless possibilities. Some of the bookplates you have featured might be interesting, and there are also extremely high resolution photos of old maps available, often for free download. On the other hand, perhaps one might tire of photographic wallpaper sooner than something a bit more abstract and traditionally printed.

DeleteIt's a fun trend and although some of it might be a bit much for a large area, seems like just the ticket for what I'm assuming is a small space (your downstairs bathroom). If it's a powder room, and not a full bath, so much the better ... you can go with a totally wild pattern and really have fun. Love the Penguin books.

ReplyDeleteMe, too! When I go back to the UK in the fall, I will be scouring the shops for great wallpaper. I am sure I can do the whole room with one roll, maybe two.
Deletecolor copy the Botanical prints you just pulled from the old book and use them.
ReplyDeleteAtom Bee... they're black engravings, so unless i colour them in, they're kind of boring. i am sure i could also find a shed-load of anatomical drawings hanging around here, too. or maybe even some architectural drawings... just sayin'.

Deletelove the book jackets and maps and scrap wood (the last for the oddness only....not sure I'd use it!). The book jackets would be great for a bath - is this the one that you earlier wallpapered with pages from an old book?

Ceci... i keep doing different things in this bath, and end up not liking them. The old pages of the book smell very musty. I can't stand that. Taking them all down and doing something else.

DeleteI think the faux stone and faux wrought iron papers could be a lot of fun in a commercial setting, but I don't love those for a powder bath. I do like fun novelty papers for a small bath, like the picture gallery paper.

DeleteI like faux wallpaper for a small room, like a bathroom or mudroom. The wrought iron design is lovely and so is the American stone, but I used a rich leopard in a small bathroom with gold faucets and shaded sconces.....elegant and always in style!

DeleteI love a whimsical wallpaper, but - in a small area, in small doses. In my last house, there was a very small boring pass-thru area and I put a "library" paper there - it worked beautifully. I love the Penguin Classics paper - great for a walk in closet - powder room - hallway -its just a happy paper!
