Weekend Update: The Good and The Bad

First up, what did you think of the Olympics Closing Ceremony?image I watched the live stream from the BBC (thanks to Tunnelbear.com) and thought it was pretty interesting, with lots of classic rock music. However, when I watched the NBC broadcast, it looked like a mash up of seemingly unrelated things.

My friend David was in this scene, and we’re pretty sure we saw him!imageHe told me that the Spice Girls were his opening act.image

We had a small party to watch the closing ceremonies, and the most fun part of the evening was eating some of the delicious cupcakes my friend Julie made. I had found some fun cupcake papers and toppers that were PERFECT for the event. imageThey’re from Meri Meri, which has some great party pieces.

Here’s our friend posing with his cupcake, and then licking all of the icing off it!

The fun events of the weekend were overshadowed by the tragic shooting of our dear friend Larry, who was shot six times, and is still alive. Most unfortunately, the person with him was killed. I featured some images from Larry’s amazing house a few months ago, but thought I’d share some of them again.

Larry’s a vibrant and out-going member of the Mt. Vernon neighbourhood in Baltimore and is known by everyone, and everyone loves him!

He and his partner run a gorgeous bed and breakfast called Empire House, which I had been planning to feature on Pigtown*Design.image

I hope that you will put some good wishes and positive thoughts out into the ether for Larry. He needs all of the good thoughts he can get.

Thank you.

  1. Meg,

I am so very sorry to hear about your friend Larry! How tragic! My friend was shot last weekend 8 times, he was the responding officer to the shooting in Wisconsin at the temple.

Life is so very fragile. My thoughts and prayers are with Larry.

    I like the closing ceremonies..

  2. Hi Meg,
I can't believe how you guys have to live over there, shootings seem such a common occurrence. It happens so rarely here it's quite shocking. I understand the whole gun debate but freedom comes at a hell of a cost! I will say prayers for your friend.

I also understand NBC didn't make a very good job of either Olympic ceremonies, a lack of understanding maybe? It was a great concert last night, I didn't think I would enjoy it, but I thought it was great. I now have Olympic withdrawal, what to do?

    Stay well!

And i was less than impressed with thE NBC coverage. Realized that they didn't play Ray Davies' Waterloo Sunset.

  4. That's terrible news about your friend Larry and his friend. I wish Larry all the best.

I have mixed thoughts about the Olympics, which I won't air here. The Olympics havent finished, the Paralympics are to come.

Love the cup cake accoutrements, dare I ask are the drinks Mint Juleps?

We didn't drink juleps. Some prosecco, some wine and some lemonade. School night!

  5. That is just terrible about your friend.
I have to say that I did not watch one minute of the Olympics. I think I am in the minority with disinterest.

  10. Oh your poor friend Larry - I do hope he pulls through - how dreadful for him, his friend and all their families etc. So sad - my condolences to all concerned, and wishing Larry a speedy recovery.

I enjoyed the Olymics closing ceremony very much - was't it fun! I was very proud to be British and just wished I had managed to get over to Blighty this summer. I was very dubious about the games, but in the end decided to just go with the flow and enjy the whole thing - and I certainly did!

There are some great pieces that NBC cut including a piece by Ray Davies of the Kinks.

  11. I agree with you, that the live stream of the closing ceremony was far better than NBC's broadcast. I watched it live on my computer for a couple of hours and then later I caught what NBC was showing on television later at night. I don't think it was lack of understanding, as it seemed like a large concert and party celebrating Britain's contribution to (mostly) rock and pop music. I think NBC had to edit the show because it started at 9:30 PM and ended at 11:00. Then I heard it resumed at midnight, but by then I was fast asleep. The live stream seemed to go on much longer than that, and without commercials, so there was simply a lot more there. I loved the ecclectic selection of performers, from David Bowie, Queen, The Rolling Stones, and The Who and then later on with more recent bands, Spice Girls, Take That, and Jesse J. Fun to watch and just Brilliant!

So sorry to hear about the tragedy your friend suffered. Although I don't know him, I am sending out positive thoughts for him. It's really not so common for things like this to happen to people who are not involved with illegal activity, and it is very shocking when it does happen. Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery!

    1. Thanks for your good wisges, Ben.

As for the Olympics coverage, they cut some of the good parts and let some other parts run on too long. And then stopping for an hour and coming back? I am sure they lots a significant portion of the audience then!

  13. Tried to watch the live stream on NBC but could only get a passport photo size image and gave up. Time NBC invested in a local to do the commentary. NBC Rio are you listening? Two famous super models but the rest were left nameless, no comment on the Morris Dancers, Welsh ladies in traditional dress on the stage. My niece was one of 300 ballet dancers in the late stages of the broadcast, and wouldn't you know, NBC cut this section. Is a principal dancer and corps de ballet too high brow or not suitable for the American audience?

    Loved Eric Idle.

    1. I was so tickled to see the Welsh ladies, although I never saw anyone dress like that when I lived there! Captions would have been helpful for more than they did. And such a shame about the ballet dancers being cut, as was Ray Davies of the Kinks.

  14. Meg,
Your party looked like such fun, and how nice you were able to watch the BBC version. I gave up on NBC. It was awful, not to mention way too many commercial interruptions.
So very sorry about your friend, Larry. A terrible tragedy, and I will send positive energy ourt for him to have a full recovery. Way too many shootings!

NBC was a huge FAIL! I watched BBC via the Tunnelbear connection, which basically assigns you a new temporary IP address for the UK.

    1. Bonnie... it's so sad all around. I am sure you've read a bit about it. He's done a lot for Mt. Vernon.

Party was fun and verrrry low key!

  16. Oops....missed all but the opening. I tried to stream here (France) but couldn't make it work. Inm surfs NBC cut a bunch tho for time constraints. I find it annoying when they cut back and forth. I hope on demand will fill me in when we get home, that or YouTube.
Re Larry: I looked up the Sun coverage, what an awful happening! I hope he's doing better.

  17. Meg, I'm so sorry to hear about your friend, Larry. I hope he is recovering and will be praying for him.

I live in Canada and watched the Closing Ceremony on CTV, which I thought did a really good job. The Closing Ceremony just blew me away - much better than the Closing Ceremony of the Vancouver Olympics two years ago. Those Brits know how to throw a good party!

  18. A terrible and terrifying bit of news to read, as I've admired the Empire House for quite some time *and* because I'm moving from New York to Mt. Vernon on September 1st. May healing vibes reach Larry and all those who love and care about him.

  19. The camera work was really poor unfortunately -but I loved the music and choices made. I enjoyed them!
What happened with your friend? Random act of violence or simply the place at the wrong time? Thats why I left downtown to move up to Cleveland Park, I just was getting scared of the violent muggings in the evening in Logan Circle; so many of my friends had been attacked. I want to live somewhere I feel safe to go for a walk after dinner!

  20. I simply had to google the story about the tragedy. The community has responded with a vigil. As an ongoing investigation I can understand the police being tight lipped. T. Kojak
