I’ve just discovered the most amazing jars, if you can believe that! I hate putting my food in plastic when I am storing it or reheating it. It makes me uneasy about what chemicals are leaching into my food. So I have started collecting old Pyrex glass storage containers, and recently, I came across a cache of Weck jars. These jars are made in the US, but were originally German-made. Their shapes are so much more elegant than regular glass jars, and their rubber ring seal and glass lids are pretty much chemical free. The lids are held on by little metal clamps.
I like the fact that they can go from the fridge to the microwave, and I don’t have to worry about chemicals. They’re available through Heath Ceramics on-line, but if you order through Weck, it’s all via snail-mail. Or you could make light fixtures out of the Weck asparagus jars, like the Delancey Restaurant in Seattle did.
I've switched to glass as well.....love the look and feel of it...those pendant lights are fantastic! k
ReplyDeleteHi Meg,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip--yes--plastic has got to go.
Mary
How clever to make light fixtures out of those bottles! I so admire people who can think about the possibilities in things like that.
ReplyDeleteJust today, at lunch, I cringed as my husband heated up some soup in the tupperware container. (I always remove it and heat it the slow way -- in a pot on the stove.)
Do they still make that blue pyrex?
My boyfriend and I agree with you! We're both switching to glass as much as possible. It is difficult to find anything that doesn't have at least a plastic lid, though. Good finds!
ReplyDeleteThat is SO funny... my husband and I have just been talking about getting rid of all our plastic food containers (especially the ones stained orange by spaghetti sauce, which NEVER comes out...) and getting pyrex.
ReplyDeleteHowever... never heard of WECK before! They are gorgeous!
Switching to glass now. We had a set of those turquoise pyrex dishes growing up - in fact Mom STILL uses them!
ReplyDeleteI got rid of my tupperware and started using only glass refrigeratior dishes over 12 years ago. I have a great collection and love how they look in the fridge.
ReplyDeleteAnd WECK canning jars? Don't get me started! I love these! I have a whole bunch of these and use them every year for canning fruit, veggies and jam. But I never thought about light fixtures, I love these! Really smart!
never heard of them, but they are actually so cute!!!!!
ReplyDeleteyes, i've steered away from plastic myself for a few years now. I love the pyrex dishes with the blue rubber lids -fits completely tightly for the rough commutes to the office. Never a spill!
ReplyDeleteI'd love more of the Pyrex fridge containers. We have Eric's grandmother's and love it. Ours is a royal blue if you find any in your treasure hunting. :) Woodberry Kitchen served mini chocolate pudding in the Weck glasses just this Thursday for my big meeting. Love them. More photos soon. xoxo
