It’s shocking that it’s been 17 years since we awoke to the news that Princess Diana had been killed in a car accident in Paris. I remember getting up before the crack of dawn to watch her wedding with a group of friends, but I couldn’t bring myself to watch the funeral. It was just too emotional for me.
She was a beautiful woman, and as she grew older, she became even more beautiful. Her look and make-up was toned way down and she became a very classic beauty.
Diana was a beautiful subject for photographers, whether candid snaps or in the studio. The series of photographs she did with Mario Testino before she died are among some of the most beautiful of her.
However, there are still a few unflattering ones of her floating around the web.
It is interesting to think about what she would have accomplished had she lived.
But we’ll never know.
Whether one was a fan or not, she was a huge influence to all and ironically and injected much needed life into the royals. It is sad though how even the press don't commemorate her death like they used to anymore in the UK. But I have to say she really is a once in few generations type of figure. RIP.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that Kate will ever approach Diana in the charisma department.
DeleteThe thought of Diana's death still brings tears to my eyes. I too woke up to the front page headlines and I kept that paper. I think she was responsible for my love affair with the British monarchy. Mario Testino's seemed to capture the 'real' woman. He brought out an inner glow. I often think how she would have loved with all her heart being a grandmother to George. There will never be another woman like her.
ReplyDeleteI remember watching Saturday Night Live, and having them break in with the report. Hard to tell whether it was true or not.
DeleteAmuses me how the mysterious "they" are trying to push Kate Middleton into being perceived as a second Diana. Not even close.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree! Not even close.
DeleteI really liked Princess Diana. No, she wasn't perfect - none of us are. She said in that big televised interview (what an interview!) that she really felt a strong connection to people - people who were ill, the elderly, children - and people responded to her - she was genuine. I remember going to a friends house for a birthday thing and we all ended up watching that interview - we were blown away by how honest and real she was - we all adored her. The night she died we went (late) to a wedding reception - we had already heard the news. I didn't want to 'announce it" at this event obviously but I told a couple friends - I remember one friend had to literally sit down somewhere - she was so upset. Very sad.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Kate has the same connection. She seems a bit aloof.
DeleteShe married a few weeks before I did. Watched as the babies came. Mourned as she was laid to rest. Now, sad her grandchildren will not know her, or us, seeing her be a grandmother.
ReplyDeleteAlso miss talking about her hair, clothes, activities with my sister a thousand miles away. She was a touchstone.
Garden & Be Well, XO T
so good to keep these memories alive. On the west coast, we were still awake when the news came, such a sad night.
ReplyDeleteI still remember well the shock and disbelief of Diana's death. But I do feel Duchess Kate is a worthy successor. William chose well.
