Actually, it was a pretty quiet weekend. I was in a meeting for about six hours on Saturday, which killed a good chunk of the gorgeous day.
Fall arrived late on Friday with the temperature and humidity taking a huge dip. The sky looked different, the clouds were more fall-like and the angle of the sun had changed. I had to get an extra blanket for the bed!I have mixed feelings about fall – I love “sweater-weather” and wearing cashmere and wool, but I don’t like that the days become shorter and the sunlight isn’t as bright. I live at the bottom of a valley, and it takes forever for the sun to finally peek over the hill and the tree-tops and make it down to our little valley!

I can’t believe how many acorns I have on my lawn. I can’t even go outside in bare feet because they’re everywhere! I wonder whether that’s an indication of a bad winter coming.

I hate to do this, but I need to reinstate the comment validation. I took it off because people in the survey said they didn’t like it. I completely understand, but from my side, I am being bombarded with dozens and dozens of spam comments every day. They clog my in-box and then I have to delete them all, one at a time. There are so many other things that are a better use of my time than deleting comments like these:I get them in Chinese, Russian and barely literate English. They all have crazy links associated with them, which I never click!
Some people mentioned that they couldn’t comment because they didn’t have a blog or a gmail account. You can always click the “anonymous” button and comment that way. I appreciate each and every comment you take time to leave (except if it’s Russian spam).

I am giving a lecture about why Baltimore’s not just The Wire, on October 1, as part of the Kaleidoscope Continuing Education at Roland Park Country School. There are still some tickets available if you’re interested. Information is here. It’s going to be lots of fun and everyone gets a lovely parting gift!
How was your weekend?
Radio Lab a program on NPR discussed the topic Bots--- and computer programs designed to talk to people . Bots are every where on line and I am not a bot but the show scared me.
ReplyDeleteThat's why i reinstated the verification... the bots don't get it.
DeleteI enjoy your blog so much. It always contains something intriguing! Hoping tickets will be available at the door, as there is a slight possibility we will be in the area that day! Would love to hear your lecture.
ReplyDeleteThere should be a few tix at the door. They usually hold a couple.
DeleteCan I say that on your next trip to London or UK for that matter - you really should consider doing a talk here as you probably know the Wire was huge here. absolutely cultish. I got a thrill when my train went through the same areas that was shown in the show even though it was the less than salubrious part of town. You should think about it as I am sure it would be a huge success - just tell the Guardian you're coming...:)
ReplyDeleteDone & dusted! http://www.pigtown-design.blogspot.com/2013/07/baltimore-its-not-just-wire.html I am even cited in the book The Wire: Re-up!
DeleteA comment on Situation Acorn:

Aha... so it's last summer's crop banging me on the head now!
DeleteI had to turn comment moderation on as well on my blog, so no, I do not mind at all.
ReplyDeleteIt just got to be too irritating. Since I turned it back on, I haven't had one spam comment.
DeleteMeg, I turned the comment word verification off for awhile. I will see how it goes. That is why I had it on, was all of "like" comments above. I was spending so much time deleting and marking as spam......
ReplyDeleteThat said I want to make it as easy as possible for readers to leave comments. In my case it really validates, the artists, authors, designers, etc that I feature.

Let me know how it works!
DeleteI applaud you for turning it back on! xxpeggybraswelldesign.com
ReplyDeleteAw, come on... You mean you weren't even a LITTLE bit tempted to click on the "sexy middle-aged naked ladies" link?! Smirk. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI don't blame you at all. The thing is, I don't even get the purpose of them. I still get a few even with word verification but they rarely even have a link in them. They do often add a few keywords at the end like urban cottage blog which I guess drives google hits. urban cottage blog :)
