Long to Reign Over Us: 23,226 days, 16 hours and 23 minutes

On the evening of September 9, 2015, HR Queen Elizabeth, II will have served 23,226 days, 16 hours and 23 minutes. Once she hits 24 minutes, she will have surpassed Queen Victoria’s 63 years and seven months.image The date had been thought to happen between the 8th and 12th of September, due to leap years, not knowing the exact timing of Victoria’s uncle’s death in his sleep, and some other pesky details.image

However, Buckingham Palace has fixed the date and time as the evening of September 9th. There won’t be the pomp and circumstance that there was for the Jubilee in 2012, but HM will launch a new train in Scotland to mark the occasion. image

Naturally, there are those who wish to make a pound or two on this solemn occasion, like Kellogg’s who is promoting Queen Flakes, only available at a cereal bar (!) in Manchester, England.image

A little more elegantly, a special series of £20 coins are being produced that show her profile as it has appeared on the currency over the past 60 years. image

Royal Crown Derby has a mug which goes for the queenly sum of £115image

In conjunction with Johnstons of Elgin, the Queen’s Scholarship Trust is producing cashmere blankets for a cool £495. Elgins holds a royal warrant from Prince Charles.image

Mappin & Webb Silversmiths are producing a limited edition silver picture frame (photo not included) for £225.image

As for me, I will be sitting at my desk at the appointed hour (12:30 EST), and will rise and sing the British National Anthem:

God save our gracious Queen!
Long live our noble Queen!
God save the Queen!
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us,
God save the Queen.

And I am flying my flags to celebrate!image

God Save the Queen, indeed!

  2. One has to admit , does she look frumpy or not? I say not. As a struggling seamstress her fabric choices are flattering and elegant. Is there a fashion writer on the planet explaining her choices to the masses? I noticed the scalloped cuffs on the sleeve on the white/cream number. Where in the USA would find such elegant fabrics? I must live in the wrong part of town. Now Meg, with your world view, is it the climate of the UK that allows such elegant layering? A dress and a coat dress and a hat-- I would be sweltering in the humidity of Florida. However, I suppose there are climates in which ,need would be for the monarch to visit. Do you have the notion to give us a slide show of some of her state visits around the world. I would be eager to hear what you have to say. God Save the Queen.

    1. Scotland at this time of year can be bloody chilly. As can the whole of Britain even in summer. I have a picture somewhere of me on Father's Day in June with a heavy sweater, hat and gloves.

    2. We returned to Scotland (from London) yesterday. It was indeed quite chilly, but today has been gloriously sunny, not unlike the photos in my last post. Tomorrow should be good too, and then it all goes to hell in a hand basket. Vivat Regina!

    3. Oh Lordy! My adored granddaughter starts at St. Andrews College (University)? this week!!! I will be visiting! My own Granny said "goes to hell in a hand basket" three times a day!! What a wonderful expression!

  3. Anon: I have read in in of her unauthorized, but approved biographies that it is well known the QEII doesn't perspire. This allows both the layering and gloves on locations around the world.

  4. I just watched a biography of her last week from the PBS series In Their Own Words. (It's available online) She has led a phenomenal life, always with grace and dignity. I've always admired her, and would hope to have her energy and stamina when I reach her age. Her schedule would exhaust twenty-somethings! So glad she's reaching this milestone.

  5. I love the first photo, The Queen looks very happy and it captures a special moment between she and Prince Philip.

    1. She does look happy. I really love that image, too. I've picked a lot of pictures on my Pinterest page that shows her smiling or laughing.

  7. It seems to me over the last several, maybe even decade her attire is more attractive. I almost think I could wear suits and hats if they looked anything like hers especially the colors.

    1. She has a new dresser who's really perked up her look. She realized that everyone wants to see her and since she's short, the best way to make HR stand out is to dress her head to toe in bright colours. And there are always little clues and nods to history or location.

  8. Really at 89 she looks fabulous! The picture in today's Washington Post in the blue suit, pearls and diamond pin was lovely. She looked up for a bit of mischief.

    2. Actually, in my opinion, it is why she is so fit and still alive! I think we all sit too much! She also isn't stooped! No slumping over the computer for that queen! Stand and conquer! We all need to stand more!!!!

    1. Have I already said this? I watched her coronation!!! We had the first TV in the neighborhood; so all the kids came over and we all watched the incredible majesty of her coronation! It was called black and white; but it was completely greenish TV!!!
I was 8 or 9! It was magnificent! I will never forget that beautiful and elegant spectacle!!!

  10. And long may she reign! Although many have commented on the splendour of Victoria's reign, Victoria, unlike Elizabeth, was incredibly unpopular for long periods of her reign. I am glad Liz has eclipsed her predecessor. Vivat Regina.
