One of my favourite scenes in the movie, “The King’s Speech” was in the speech therapist’s office with all of the peely wallpaper and mottled plasterwork.
I was really intrigued by that room, which I understood was a brothel in real life.
As I was poking around The Guardian, I saw a similar “holiday flat for let” in Brighton, England. A glass cupola, distressed walls, velvet headboard and wood wainscoting! What’s not to love (aside from the Ikea light fixture hanging down the middle)?
This is another view of the room.
As is this. I am actually quite torn about this place – some of it’s fabulous and some’s pretty ghastly. And the listing says it’s a ground floor flat, but I don’t see how that’s possible with the massive skylight.
It’s right on the beach, with a view out to sea.
There are two other bedrooms, and oddly, they both look like this:
One of two reception/living rooms with what loos like an antler lamp. I do like the metal table on the left side.
And this looks like the other.
Interior hallway with reclaimed planks.
The loo with some original details.
Right down the road from this:
This flat sleeps six and is £538 a week. Details here.
What an odd flat? Very disjointed. But great value for size and location! I don't like that main room purely due to lack of windows...
ReplyDeleteI did sort of wonder whether it is £538 a week or a night. Either way, for six people, it's a good value.
DeleteGood sleuthing! Those walls are like found art. I wonder if they put some sort of sealer on them to keep it clean. The room is a glorious with all that wall space for loads of sky lit paintings, but the rest of the flat is so-so.
ReplyDeleteIt's an odd amalgamation of things. Almost fabulous, but missing the mark.
DeleteI love Brighton, I love the flat! The only time I went back to UK, where did I go? Brighton! Met my bestie in the Lanes, had an Italian lunch, went to see some art, came back refreshed.
ReplyDeleteRegarding the flat - it is just this side of stylish and quirky: anymore, and it would have tipped over into complete muddle. And just over 500 quid is a snip - you should see what's on offer for the same price for a French gite! Not a lot - unless you do your homework.
I think they could take out about 20% of what's in there, add some fabulous pieces and have a showplace.
DeleteThere are some wonderful stripped walls in this post on the "New Georgians" in The Bible of British Taste blog: http://www.bibleofbritishtaste.com/the-englishmans-room-gavin-stamp-and-anti-ugly/
ReplyDeleteI used to stay in a house which we called "Peeling Ceilings" that had sort of this same effect.
DeleteI think it's really interesting actually....i mean - sort of funky, no? Obviously done inexpensively but with a lot of thought put into everything. Plus it seems really inexpensive even in LBs -but I've never been to Brighton so what do I know. haha
ReplyDeleteHmmmmmm---interesting. Bohemian not-so-chic.
ReplyDeleteMary
The building used to film The King's Speech wasn't a brothel - it's actually much more interesting than that. It's a Georgian house at 33 Portland Place - check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Davenport_(fraudster) for more detail.
ReplyDeleteI have so longed for exactly those sort of walls in my house... but there's nothing worse than "faux" done badly, and I'm terrified to try it.
ReplyDeleteI quite like it but when you check the rates it's £1400 a week for this time of year (and that's with an off season discount) so not cheap. brighton is fabulous though.
