Sunflowers

I was feeling a little down this weekend, missing Connor a lot, and with the hellishly hot weather, I decided I needed a little cheering up. I was in no mood to trek around the farmers’ market in all the heat, so I took a jaunt to the local Whole Foods. While I don’t usually shop there, I know that I can depend on them for a great selection of flowers at a very reasonable, and sometimes down-right cheap, price.

What better to make me smile than a huge silver pitcher of sunny sunflowers?IMG_3489

Not content with one bunch, I bought four, but at $5.99 for two bunches, it didn’t break the bank and practically fit within my $10/week flower budget.

I started out by chopping a few inches off the bottoms of the sunflowers and then arranging them in my old champagne bucket, but they were too top-heavy. Then I grabbed a great old silver water pitcher that I got at a garage sale a few years ago. 7-7 005[2]

It’s probably 14 inches tall and has an enamel lining. It’s so detailed and when I was polishing it, I realized that it’s really a rather nice piece… And I am pretty sure that I paid a pittance for it! It’s hard to see, but the spout has what looks like a little bear on one side, IMG_3514

and a bird and dog on the other.IMG_3522

The rest of the spout is beautifully detailed, as well with what looks like a big scallop shell.

The handle and the lid are perfectly aligned, and the place on the lid where it rests on the handle has a disc to prevent it from denting.IMG_3518

I love sunflowers and tried to grow them this year, but the yard guy accidentally mowed them down!IMG_3526IMG_3530

What kind of flower cheers you up?

  1. Sorry you were feeling low without Connor it is easy to miss the quiet comfort of a pet. You also just came off a big project in running your sale. Sometimes you just have to allow yourself a little down in order to get going again.

    1. Thanks! I had gone to look at dogs on Thursday, and didn't find one, so I was really missing the companionship!

  2. Daisies!! Also always inexpensive. I have 2 bunches right now in my apartment. They tend to last 2 -3 weeks if you change the water out!

    1. Good idea! And carnations are another long-lasting flower. If you mass a whole ton of them, they look fabulous!

  4. Almost anything I can pick from my yard lifts my spirits. In the blistering Oklahoma summer heat, I enjoy my flowers more inside than out! Crepe Myrtle is in full bloom here now, and it laughs at the hot humid weather by flaunting its frilly blooms. They don't last long inside but long enough to make me laugh too.

    1. I do have a lot of geraniums in pots, and my big gardenia, but I needed something front and center in the house. The crepe myrtle here is spectacular this year!

  5. Your silver pitcher is perfect for the sunflowers, they are so uplifting to a room. At 7000 ft. elevation, we are still waiting for the sunflowers stalks to bloom. Looking forward to their cheery faces!
I'm sure you still miss Connor, we miss reading about him, as well. As a long time "Lab" person, I know how special a yellow boy can be. It may take some time, but you will soon find another wonderful companion!

    1. The pitcher is great for large bunches and large flowers! It's tall enough that it helps prop the stems up. And the sunflower stalks are too big for the flower frogs that I have.

Not sure if I am getting another Lab. I am hoping to find something a little smaller.

  6. Sorry to hear you were feeling low. Do you think you're ready for another gorgeous creature?

I have been blowing my budget with peonies but justify it as the season is short! Sunflowers are just so cheerful'

    1. Just a combination of things, including Connor. I looked for a dog at the shelter on Thursday, but I reallllllly don't want a pitbull. They had a husky and another dog, but neither really spoke to me.

I think I got one bunch of peonies this year! I need to make sure I have flowers all summer.

  7. Pets and flowers are the best mood elevators! Hope you find the dog who speaks to you soon.. I'm a corgi and white flower (cosmos, tulips, and hydrangeas at the moment) person myself.

    1. I sure the right dog, like the right house did, will come to my attention in an unexpected way.
