Christie’s in London is hosting their third annual “Out of the Ordinary” auction on September 10th in their auction rooms in South Kensington. I wrote about it last year, here, and always find the most amazing things there. The auction has been a smashing success for the past two years, and features items that just don’t quite fit into a defined category.
Here are some of the items that caught my eye!
A silver mounted seed pod, the largest in the world. Estimate $7,000 to $12,000
Four small Victorian “Sorcerers” Mirrors. Estimate $1,200 to $1,800
Original poster from the Grateful Dead show at the Avalon Ballroom. Estimate $9,000 to $14,000
Animal Kingdom stereograph images with viewer. I have a TON of these at the office of body parts. Much more interesting than these and I have hundreds. This lot is for ten! Estimate $8,000 to $12,000 (maybe I should sell ours!)
19th Century French automaton of dancers. Estimate $7,000 to $12,000
19th Century chastity belt entirely of IRON! (Owwwwwie!) Estimate $1,000 to $1,500
Rare 1920’s Louis Vuitton “Malle Secretaire” canvas trunk. Estimate $23,000 to $39,000
Set of 21 novelty tole biscuit tins. Estimate $3,000 to $6,000
A felt crown worn by Kate Moss (not pictured) on her first photoshoot at age 14. Estimate $7,000 to $12,000 (!!!)
Floris “Royal Arms” Diamond Jubilee edition for HM QEII. Half carat diamond on a gold chain. Hand-poured. Estimate $4,000 to $8,000
A pair of gilt-composition and ostrich feather lamps. Estimate $7,000 to $12,000
To see the entire list of lots, please click here. And then come back and tell me what you’d buy!
First let's talk about the ornamentation of that chastity belt, a heart? Really!? And was that dear lass supposed to poop through the clover design hole? And lastly WTF? Is up with those little teethy looking spikes!? C.R.E.E.P.Y.
ReplyDeleteI'd buy the tole biscuit tins. I already own an octagonal straw pattern one that I got at that salvage place we visited.
It freaked me out, and then I read it was IRON and totally wigged out! And I agree about the biscuit tins. Love them!
DeleteLOVE those lamps!!
ReplyDeletePretty funky!
DeleteFar too deliciously nutty to choose just one object, although the plaintive boxed bat and the opening image of the curlicue octopus (?drawing ?poster) do seem to be whispering my name.
ReplyDeleteFunnily, I didn't see the octopus in the sale!
DeleteAmazing assortment! That chastity belt, astounding and torturous!

Definitely not the chastity belt! Maybe the tins since my collection disappeared during one of our many moves.
ReplyDeletewhat fun + i would get the palm trees (last picture)xxpeggybraswelldesign.com
ReplyDeleteLove those mirrors. I've seen similar before but never with a color. Oh, those trunks, how elegant.
ReplyDeleteSome thoughts on the chastity belt. 1) You could totally misbehave while wearing it, if you were limber and determined. 2) If you're wearing it, do you make heart-shaped poop? (Note the location of the cutouts!) 3) Hysterically funny that it's designed to maim the intruder (see saw teeth facing outward around target area) and not the wearer, even though the wearer could be a naughty girl!
ReplyDeleteCould not find on the web, image of kate moss wearing that "crown" boo hoo.
ReplyDeletei used to collect the biscuit tins and have so many ! did you notice the spikes on the chastity belt? god. just awful!!!!!!
ReplyDeletejust read the comments and see a lot of people noticed the spikes or teeth on the belt. that makes me claustrophobic just looking at it.
