Condition: Rusting and dents!Honestly, this is just insulting. I could have bid on a couple of these, both in better and in worse condition the other day at the auction… especially if I knew I could have gotten this kind of dosh for them! Oh, OKL!
Why all of the OKL bashing? I really don't get it. As a designer who has sold on OKL before, I think that it is fine to be able to sell whatever they want to. Each designer sets their own price. You need to think about the time factored into the designer finding the piece and the % that OKL is taking from the sale. Most of the buyers that shop OKL are not going to be out at flea markets searching for this kind of stuff themselves. They are wanting a certain look and they are willing to pay the price for that. What is so wrong with that?
What is the saying? It's only worth what someone will pay for it.
Meg, OKL does it again - they never fail to amuse me. Like you I have seen hundreds of these at junk auctions, if only I knew, I would be rich by now. BTW, we are off to Scotland at the end of this months and I'm going to try your recommendation of the Loch Fyne Oyster Bar - sounds wonderful!!! Di x
Hi Meg, I think this box falls into the category of "Industrial Chic"---I don't get it: patinated surfaces, raw wood, etc. are great, but rusted with splinters is yucky. Maybe it was the color that sold it? Thanks for the chuckle! Mary
I can appreciate the point that Anonymous is making. However, for most people the prices for these items is ludicrous. It's as if these very wealthy people want to surround themselves with the appearance of owning "poorer" things. I doubt that many of them have ever used a metal tackle box and yet they want to use it to decorate their home. This just screams "inauthentic" to me. I always tell my clients to choose things that are meaningful to them. This...well, it's not what I would do for my clients.
I agree with Anon, as well. I buy and sell on Etsy so I know the work that goes into each item. But if you look at one of the sales I highlighted last week, there were identical items to an earlier sale, but the prices were vastly different. I just think it's laughable some of the prices the Tastemakers charge and get! Maybe I am just jealous!
This one had me cackling aloud, I also saw it at OKL and decided I must be daft, I did not understand the appeal.
I understand the time, energy, expenses that go into gathering and marketing things, I very much grasp that on a first person basis. But as others have pointed out, this shrieks bogus-inauthenticate-nouveau (I'll stop there), yet it is being marketed as something 'tasteful' in a 'tastemakers' sale at OKL. As a robot might say, "Does not compute."
Thanks for the laugh. I think there is one rusting in my shed as we speak. :)
ReplyDeleteI was too late!!!!!!!!! they are SOLD OUT!
ReplyDeleteGood Lord....another case of more available cash than............
Who's setting these prices? And worse yet, is anyone buying it?
ReplyDeleteWe have several of these in our shop as the husband never gets rid of anything...maybe some of his collection will be disappearing and I'll be rich!
ReplyDeleteI have 2 as well!
ReplyDeleteNot only do I wonder who buys this overpriced stuff, I wonder who comes up with the "retail" prices?

Apparently this seems to be working.

ReplyDeleteI so enjoy these posts & appreciate your humourous view on OKL. I would not call it "bashing," but pointing out that: The Emperor Has No Clothes!
ReplyDeleteSo typical of OKL. I totally agree with your reaction Meg.
ReplyDelete$5 would have been a STRETCH here!
ReplyDeleteAnd I SERIOUSLY doubt that you are jealous.....
I live for these posts.
ReplyDeleteAs soon as I see a title with their initials in it I begin to smile.
Who could possibly be buying this stuff at these prices.

Why not sell some bedazzled axes?
ReplyDeleteAnd that's more than one axe, not more than one axis.
Collecting old tackle and tool boxes and selling them on doesn't make someone a designer!
:)
