My terrific friend, David Wiesand is heading to London and Paris. We spent a few fun hours the other day talking about places to visit, but as always, the best recommendations come from friends. You’ve seen David’s amazing work on my blog and on his, so you might have a sense of his aesthetic. My list for David includes the Sir John Soane Museum, LASSCO, Liberty, and Heals in London. And in Paris, the Marché aux Puces St-Ouen de Clignancourt, E.Dehillerin, and of course, Shakespeare and Company Books. What are your suggestions for David?
I was on Travelzoo the other day; they are practically paying you to go to London right now. In case anyone needs that info...
ReplyDeleteDefinitely the Victoria & Albert Museum, followed by a short walk to the newly opened V&A Reading Rooms (www.vandareadingrooms.co.uk). 'The Reading Rooms' is actually a stand-alone bookshop run by the V&A complete with its own wine bar. The selection of books is fantastic and the sellers don't mind you sitting down to browse through a lovely book on interiors with a glass of wine in hand!
ReplyDeleteIts been 20 years or so but La Cupole (sp?) is a goofy old throwback restaurant near Montparnasse, I think. It turned into a bit of a tourist spot but it was the hangout of movie stars and others celebs. The interiors are art deco with high ceilings, its loud and worth it for the atmosphere.
ReplyDeleteThe Metals and Islamic Collections at the V&A! It will inspire!
ReplyDeleteIn Paris, Musee Nissim de Camondo is a fabulous decorative arts museum in a very well done early 20th house in the late eighteenth century style. I have found that few U.S. design professionals have visited.
ReplyDeleteI'm jealous....don't forget..if he is going to be there this Tuesday (first Tuesday of the month) he can tour the Soane museum BY CANDLELIGHT!!!....you must get there early though. The V & A is a must see...and even though it is not his "esthetic" The Tate Modern would fill his inspiration bucket and then some (just the walk across the bridge is an architectural delight) .......k
ReplyDeleteHad to second the recommendation for Nissim de Camondo . If he wants a day of house museums try it, Jacquemart-Andre, and the Marmotann. All Right bank, each is fabulous and Camondo and Marmotann are in some of the best BCBG neighborhoods, lots of great, real people watching.
ReplyDeletebon voyage, Leigh Ann
OMG! I want to go to that bookstore. I haven't checked out any of those places and will have to add them to my list. Sniff. The travel bug in me is itching like heck.
ReplyDeleteDennis Severs' House, St. Paul's, and Alfie's antiques.
ReplyDeleteThe Imperial War Museum if you are interested in history (or war).
ReplyDeleteIs that dog wearing shearling?
Hugo... it's faux shearling!
ReplyDeleteAnd if you like the Imperial War Museum, have you been to the National Army Museum?
