For the past three months, the weather’s been beastly hot, even at night. Sometimes, when I would check my e-mail right before bed, the temperature would still be in the 90s. I have been running the air conditioner continuously for weeks now, which is something I am loathe to do.But now, as I look at the little Weather Bug icon on my computer, it says 68*! I can’t tell you how happy I am to be able to have the doors and windows open, with a breeze blowing through. When I moved back to the States, my parents gave/lent me my grandmother’s four-poster bed, but with the narrowness of my house, it wouldn’t fit up the stairs. I made an emergency run to Ikea to get a bed frame, and am living with it until I move. I love soft, squishy down bedding, including a down mattress and down pillows. There’s nothing better than sinking into clean, cool sheets on a night like this and pulling up a light blanket. How do you like to sleep?
I love sleeping under a big down duvet on a supportive pillow with a little down for softness. I like a cool room and a cold nose. Sleep with the window open pretty much until it goes below zero here.
ReplyDeleteYes, it is a relief for you guys to get a break, finally, from the heat. My Mom is on the east coast (in NB, Canada) and she has done nothing but complain about the heat and humidity this summer. They seem to get similar weather to you eastern seaboard folks.
Welcome cool crisp nights. xo Terri
I love crisp, ironed top quality percale sheets and a down pillow. A down blanket covered by a Portuguese coverlet. Of course, there is a folded sheet at the foot of the bed for Jones. Sleep well. Mary
ReplyDeleteMy John Robshaw quilt....
ReplyDeletemy one true luxury that I give thanks for every. single. night.
Crisp white sheets, line dried, under a down comforter with the windows wide open. So snoozable!
ReplyDeleteCrisp, white, hang dried sheets, firmest mattress short of a hardwood floor experience. Ceiling fan on (windows open lets in too much traffic noise and soot.)
ReplyDeletelove that and so to bed sleigh bed.
ReplyDeleteI love sleeping with the window open in early autumn/late summer just as it is getting a tiny bit chilly. Pillows - pillows - pillows - and lots of blankets for snuggling in the winter are essential to me. And you KNOW I love that first set of sheets - I almost bought them about two years ago.
ReplyDeleteWherever I live, my little Empire daybed--and when I say little, I mean 24 inches wide--sits right under the windows, which are open every night, all year long. It's the closest I can come to the breezy sleeping porch at my grandmother's.
ReplyDeleteAs far as bedding goes, freshly ironed linen sheets sheets are great & all, but who has time for that? For that matter, who has an iron? Not me. So I hung up the antique sheets at the window & these days I sleep right on the wool mattress cover. Believe it or not, it's cooler than than cotton and cooloer than all but the first five seconds of lines. Plus, it's fuzzy. A single cotton sheet on top is plenty in hot weather--the lowest thread count I can find.
In the winter, I skip the top sheet & sleep right under a pile of vintage olive green army blankets. I don't know what people are talking about when they call army blankets scratchy. Maybe new ones are, but the vintage ones I buy have an incredibly soft hand. Heavy, but soft. Or maybe that's just from being washed so often in hot water & tumbled dry, on hot. These puppies are indestructible, and if they were ever going to shrink at all, they did it fifty years ago. Plus they're a beautiful color--a perfect match for the dark olive walls in my old apartment. At $5 a pop, old army blankets are the single greatest bargain in home furnishing. Available at a Goodwill near you.
