After a cocktail or two, I decided to hang the Michel-Etienne Turgot Map, about which I’ve written several times. I measured once, twice, thrice and then placed the center piece, No. 13. I made the temporary decision not to frame the pieces because at 19.5” x 13.5” I would have to have custom-made frames – 25 in total!
I wandered down to the local office supply store and picked up two sticks of “post-it” glue. I figured if I hated where the map was, or I decided to do something different, I could easily remove it without damaging either the wall or the map.
At this point, you might be asking why not something like tacks or nails… I live in an 1880’s house with rock plaster over brick walls, so it’s impossible to get anything into it!
As I went to mount the top row of maps, I realized that the two or three places where I’d taken the measurements were at high points in the wall, and that the measurement was off by about a quarter of an inch. Luckily, there’s an edge around the perimeter of the map, so once I cut that off, the top row should fit!
**UPDATE** I finally finished the top row. My 120+ year old rowhouse is quite crooked as you can see by the difference between the left and right sides of the map. Luckily, there were no accidents while installing the map, as I was standing on tippy-toes, on a high stool! And all the while, as I was working on this project, Connor was snoozing on the sofa under my favourite cashmere blanket. Bad dog!

Beautiful and amazing - don't you love the courage that a cocktail or two instills?
ReplyDeleteBut, the most enchanting part of the pictures has got to be the pooch, especially the picture with him resting his paw against the wall.
I'd love to find an old map like that - it's simultaneously decorative from a distance and interesting up close.
ReplyDeletelooking good - brave to attack the project after cocktails
ReplyDeletewow! I am jealous! it really is looking fabulous and I love Connor just sleeping through it all!!!
ReplyDeletelucky you!!!
Joni
I like it better unframed. Post it glue is a great idea. Now I know how to hang a map I've been storing a while.
ReplyDeleteWell done! It looks great. I presume this is from your own-created file, with the 25 edges cropped? I'd kill for a spare bit of wallspace like that. Unfortunately mine will have to wait until I have a new house, especially after I've just bought two new C18th pictures at auction, about which more later, so "space at a premium" is now mission impossible!
ReplyDeleteCol... this is the map I bought. I couldn't deal with all of the printing, fitting and trimming. It was worth the $60 to buy it.
ReplyDeleteMy house is wee... it's 11.5 feet wide and about 30+ feet long.
Meg - this is quite impressive, though clearly Connor thought you were up to the task the whole time.
ReplyDeleteCocktails, stool, tippy-toes... could have been a bad thing. So glad Connor was keeping a weather eye... That looks amazing and makes me think I should paper my little French powder room with it. It would totally cover three of the walls.
ReplyDeleteI bought my copy at the Louvre and had it aged slightly and each piece individually framed under glass - it now hangs in my hall as the only piece decoration other than the rug.
ReplyDeletebeautifully done, and great solution to hanging on plaster over brick walls- been there, ruined that...
ReplyDeleteand may i say that the photo of connor snuggling under the blanket is my favorite of him yet!
Great job Meg. We have a 12 panel map of Rome in our office. I'm glad I wasn't the one that had to install it.
ReplyDeleteIt looks great Meg! And who could ask for a better assistant than Connor!
ReplyDeleteLooks awesome. That would be a great solution for renters too - you could wall paper a room, basically, with post it glue and maps!
ReplyDeleteConnor looks like he's wondering what all of the flapdoodle is about. Love the map. Love the fact you didn't fall off the ladder under Connor's watch. Think you should blow up this pic of Connor. It's a beaut!
ReplyDeleteHBD... Don't let Connor fool you! Every injury I've had recently has been as a result of him. Bruised fingernail, fall down the stairs, separated joints in my finger, numerous falls on the sidewalk, etc. He's not as benign as he looks! He's the devil houdini dog.
ReplyDeletei think he's being a good dog, not knocking you off the stool! lol
ReplyDeleteHow cool Meg!
ReplyDeleteMeg, this is amazing. Very impressive. Does the post it glue really hold the map in place, I was assuming the map is mounted, or no?
ReplyDeleteLove the Map! Post-it glue was a brilliant idea - which I will use -
ReplyDeleteOFTEN!
Love the fact that Conner was holding up the wall for you!
That looks really great. Post-it glue is such a good idea too.
ReplyDeleteLove it! The Post-It glue is a fabulous solution! I'm still messing around with my downloaded version and haven't come up with a solution yet!
ReplyDeleteNancy
It looks gorgeous and it seems we all love your dog. They are such characters. What an accomplishment to get this hung even close to perfect!
ReplyDeleteIs it too l ate to ask you to send me a jpeg? In the gray toned? The map is gorgeous!!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you.
Meg,
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited. My map just came, and tho I got it cuz I luv it I was unsure where I'd use it. Thought I might use it to paper the powder room. BUT the curved wall in the hall outside it just begged to have the map. As soon as my other tasks are done (stage lighting design and a telethon) I plan to paint the wall and install the map.
My husband was blown away by it.
Ooh, I have the same map, but I haven't hung it up yet.
ReplyDeleteI got a bunch of Ikea clips frames that are just slightly too big to put them in, but the post-it glue sounds like a brilliant idea. Any idea if it'll damage the paper over time?
Thank you so much for your posts of this map. I found a version for sale on Barnes & Nobel and just received it. Posting about it today on my blog with a link back to you!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your constant inspiration!!
Thanks for the wonderful idea of Post-It glue.
ReplyDeleteA year later, has the glue held on? I'm worried the edges of the sheets might start coming loose requiring constant touch ups.
