Valentine’s Day

I am not a huge fan of Valentine’s Day, believing that it’s just a Hallmark® holiday, and manufactured solely to benefit the card, candy and flower industries. You should show people you love them in small ways throughout the year, instead of making a big show on Valentine’s Day. But then I am a huge cynic!

The Baltimore Sun created some funny Baltimore-centric Valentine’s cards which I thought I’d share with you. Explanations provided.

In honour of the 200th Anniversary of our national anthem.image

In honour of hometown poet, Edgar Allan Poeimage

In honour of the huge Domino Sugars plant on the harbour.image

A nod to the 10-layer Smith Island cake, the state cake of Maryland.image

It is a requirement that every kitchen in Maryland have at least one tin of Old Bay® seasoning.image

An homage to the cow steer who escaped from the knackers and ran through the streets of Baltimore this spring.image

Once a crab hooks on to you, they don’t let go.image

Happy Valentine’s Day!

  1. For me, Valentine's Day is a nostalgic time more than anything else. I can still remember the SMELL of it - the Valentine candy(pinks, reds, creams) at the dime store, which we purchased by the scoopful, weighed out and given to us in a little white bag. The big heart shaped Valentine boxed chocolates ( boxes are collectible now), making a decorated box to take to school to hold my Valentines - I remember being especially proud of a tin foil one with glued on flowers & hearts. We made the boxes on our own, I never remember my mom getting involved at all in the process, which really was a good thing - parents are so overbearing now it seems, Our grandma always gave us something special - a little trinket, some Valentine hankies, I still have those! As a adult and married over 35 years - my husband and I have never really gave too much attention to Valentines Day. By the time I had kids (in the 80's), everything had changed, no more dime store candy, mass marketed Valentine stuff EVERYWHERE, most kids no longer make the special Valentine box to take to school...no, its not the same. My sisters and I talk about this every Valentines Day. We loved it as kids!

  2. In Korea and Japan they created a new holiday in the last two decades and it is called White Day which is a month after Valentine's Day and it is the turn of the partner who got something to reciprocate.

  3. Oh my the Movie A Little Romance might change your mind Meg. Such a sweet movie.

  4. Cute pics Meg!! I do believe in Valentine's Day, must just be the romantic in me!!

    Happy Valentine's weekend!
