Hammer Time: Auction Scores!

My pal, Andrea and I went to an auction on Saturday and had a great time. At least I did, mainly because I did so well in my bidding. Andrea left a few bids on things, and we’re not sure if she won any of them yet.

I had previewed the auction on Thursday and had checked off a few things on my list, including a couple lots which I deemed to be “must haves”, or must have up until a certain number. I warned Andrea that I was well-prepared to shove her out of the way if she bid on anything I had my eye on, but luckily, that didn’t happen!

I had seen these gorgeous Wedgwood teacups and saucers and just fell for them. The colours are so perfect for this time of year and Andrea, who in addition to designing great handbags, is also a floral designer, suggested that these might make fabulous centerpieces for an Easter table with some beautiful spring flowers arranged in them! A bit late to be planning that, but there’s always next year. I love the little gold dots around the rim of the cup and the edge of the saucer. The mark on these dates them to between 1950 and 1962, but they’re still very contemporary, aren’t they?

The next lot, and the one I was sure would have a lot of frenetic bidding, ended up having the opening bid dropped to an “insultingly low number” as pal David says, and I swooped in and got it for a song.

This was a massive stroke of luck, since I’d been prepared to go the distance on it. The lot comprised of more than 50 items, including the bar set above, which includes eight of the tall glasses, eight of the short ones, three decanters, one each for gin, scotch and rye, a water pitcher and a carrier for the decanters!

But wait, there’s more!

Eight of these Culver glasses in gold and turquoise with a carrying rack!

Eight of these glasses in tall and short versions. Numbered with hilariously out of date sayings!image

Eight tall, frosted glasses with white and gold horses, which would be ideal for a Derby or Preakness party.
(Sorry, they’re impossible to photograph!)

Only one of this amazing glass, which would be perfect for Halloween.

Apparently, my glass was one of a set of eight, which would have been AMAZING to have! This set was on 1st Dibs.imageI’d feel like a member of the Addams Family with these!

Here are a few more pieces from the auction.

Ten inch Blue Willow bowl. I’ve never seen one this size before. No marks though.

Davenport dish, circa 1810-1825

I am still unpacking things, but I am really pleased with the pieces I won. Look for them in my Etsy shop in the next week or so. As much as I love to collect, I love the thrill of the hunt even more!

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

I am still feeling the effects of last week in High Point. I had to buy a new camera because I couldn’t change any of the settings or download pictures from my camera. And I am still editing the hundreds of pictures I took at the various showrooms, and at my Sponsors!

  2. Hi Meg,

Those Wedgewood teacups were an amazing find! I would have snatched them right up myself. They do feel very contemporary.

    Cheers!

    1. That was another of the lots that didn't get many bids. And there were numerous dealers and pickers there, too!

  4. Oh great finds -love these, esp the vintage glassware! I got a few finds at my favorite junk shop Friday but luckily (for my wallet) there were no estate sales to tempt me. I think it's nearly time for me to purge on ebay....saturday I was spring cleaning and I have 'finds' hidden all over!

  5. WOW!! You really did score. Those amazing gold decorated glasses and decanters would be super pricey at auction out here in CA. Go Girl!!! And the cups & saucers are perfection.

  7. Great scores! Those sherbet colored cups and saucers practically scream summer to me, full of ice cream or sorbet, on a hot summer's day.

I love the color of the Davenport dish, a beautiful burnt orange.

    1. I was trying to describe the Davenport to my mother and said it was a gorgeous mustard.

    2. So, what is your verdict, mustard or burnt orange?

    3. Deep mustard, but not bright ballpark mustard. I just got a new camera, so I am still learning the settings! I have a burnt orange table, and it's not the same.

    4. It is so funny how cameras can alter true color. Thank you and good luck with the new camera and playing about with it.

    1. Especially an auction day when you score such goodies as I did! I've gotten some really fun things at auctions. Can't wait to go back to England/Wales in the fall and do some hunting!
