Holiday Shopping: Etsy

More and more, I am convinced that I don’t want to shop at the big retailers, buying things that they’re pushing at me. I want to shop in places where my purchase will make a difference. And I can see the argument that buying at a big retailer employs workers, helps the country’s economy, etc. but that’s not my logic.

As you may know, I have an Etsy shop, the contents of which ebb and flow as I have time to dedicate to it. However, there are thousands of people who make their living from their Etsy shops.image

I like supporting people to whom I am not just a faceless transaction, so I shop at small businesses, of which Etsy shops are some. I thought I’d share some of the shops I like with you. (Click image for links.)

My friend Wendy and her sister opened D&W Stone Crafts recently. They make custom stone coasters and trivets. image

Having taken navigation classes at college, and always wanting to know where I am in the world, I was taken with these simple bracelets. You can get one for a special place in your life.image

If a bracelet isn’t what you want, what about a print of a favourite town or place?  The Natty Boh man is an icon in Baltimore.image

If you can’t find a copy of the book, you can always buy a pillow, from Empress of the Eye blogging buddy, Jane Schottimage

While some people might not appreciate it, I think that giving someone a favourite book is such a wonderful present. This was one of the best memories of my childhood.image

Or you can give a completely unique gift, something no one else will ever think of giving, like this vintage French clock-making kit!image

Just be aware that when shopping on Etsy, you’ll lose track of all time and come up for air hours later, filled with great ideas and wondering where the time has gone!

  6. Thanks for the mention Meg...the "Adventure" pillows are doing very well! If you can't shop local at least support ETSY...it really is like being a a wonderful close knit family. No matter how many buyers go to how many markets around the country trying to find the "next IT" thing, you will more than likely find it on Etsy made by a struggling creative person. Happiest of Holidays to all!
