Long Hall

On the second floor, I have a long hallway, about 20 feet from end to end. This is an image from last year, right about this time, when I first looked at the house. This is looking from my bedroom, with the work room on the right, to the upstairs bath at the end. 4405 002[2]I want to do a long row of identically-framed pictures, but can’t think of what I want to do.HallwayIn my last house, I had a row of images that I’d taken when I lived in the UK. Each was special to me and had some meaning, starting with the one on the left, which was of the historic Caerphilly Castle in Wales.

Since I no longer have those images, I need something else. Probably about 10 or 12 pictures… I went through a lot of my images, trying to find some sort of theme, but nothing jumped out at me.

Suggestions?

  2. How about the Secret Life of Flowers, in color and/or black and white?

  3. Hello Meg,

Why not frame some of your gorgeous fabric swatches, or wallpaper samples?

    Happy Valentine's Day!

  4. I looked through your categories on this blog and found Life in Baltimore has 454 entries. Given that the images were of Wales, this confirms my first thought of selecting photos or representations of your favourite places in Baltimore. If you can't narrow it down, make it easy to change out the images. If you prefer to show people, do you have pictures of your ancestors?

  5. Mirrors with different frames and in different sizes.

  6. It would be a cheerful looking wall if the images were of the fresh flowers that you bought over the years.

  7. Since you're an internet genius, you'll be able to find an abundance of images from just about any subject you adore -- whether vintage scenes from Baltimore, antique herbaria/botannicals, vintage Vanity Fair prints, birds of all kinds -- all easily downloadable, delivered straight to your printing tray in seconds! Just select the topic that makes your heart sing since you tromp that hall with frequency. Have fun with it! Cannot WAIT to see the results!

  8. How about pictures of Baltimore? Either large views of the Harbor and other landmarks, or close up details of doors and windows or hidden gardens like the things you show us. Or, just dogs. I do like the mirror idea though. Couldn't be all the same, but would add some nice light. Ann

  9. Or maybe maps of Baltimore or other favorite places. Old maps, new maps, topography maps...

  10. Hi Meg, It seems to me that a row of framed images would tend to make the hall seem longer. What about blowing up (really large) a few favorite images--perhaps maps of favorite neighborhoods of Baltimore and framing them. or mounting the large images on board and lacquering them. Perhaps stretching large sections of favorite fabrics (as suggested by Chemin) ... anything that would visually shorten the length of the hall and that would also make your heart sing first thing in the morning. Have a super week. Mary

  11. What happened to your framed images of Wales? I don't think I would have been willing to part with those. You will come up with something great, I have no doubt.
What about pictures of Connor or Connor & Halas in various poses? Ok, I admit it: I am a crazy dog lady.

  12. Unfortunately, the images from Wales were starting to fade, and since the original images were on a computer (since stolen), I don't have them anymore. I want to preserve them, and so hanging them will cause further fading.

  13. How about a series of photos by you... like some of the beautiful homes that youphotographed, or some local gardens or other places that have particular meaning to you, and, of course Connor, as others have already suggested.

  14. I agree with Marjorie. I love to see fabric as art.

  15. rather than a line of pictures -how about more of a gallery wall at different heights and spacings? Just hold, nail and hang. The randomness of it would help such a long narrow hall. Plus it's easy to add to as your collection grows.

  16. I have such a hall and on one side I have photos of my family's life in the military-including war photos, ships, a naval academy diploma and then on the other wall I have some waterfowl festival posters framed and Eastern Shore scenes. random hangings-. Lots of people stop and look at everything so the hall tells stories.

  17. I agree with ArchitectDesign about the hanging of the pictures. It becomes a more interesting walk down the hall when your eye is allowed to wander a bit. And, you could mix in the suggested mirrors and framed fabrics for color amongst black and white photos for added interest. I have the same long hallway and I framed two giant maps onto foam core without glass that I mark with pins showing my travels, one of the U.S. and the other a world map. It's also a great space to play with vivid paint colors on the wall.

I find the energy and joy from original art always delights

  19. here's what I would do, and it's cheap!

Paint some squares, rectangles, circles, or whatever shape you love the most with chalkboard paint, and then either frame them with similarly sized frames or paint your own "frames" around them and then write your favorite quotes, words of wisdom, names of cities, etc., that mean something to you.

When you tire of the words or want a change, grab a sponge, erase and chalk up whatever new thing inspires you! It's totally personal and completely changeable on a whim!

  20. Hi Meg, larger pics - I would recommend maps, map of memories (places gone) map of dreams (places going). Have fun.

  21. I love the idea of the identical frames going down the hall. I'm fascinated recently by intaglios. I bought a collection of some that are framed on antique French ledgers... Nothing fancy, just old paper notes, really. But if you could find, and if anyone can, it's you, some cool intaglios, they would be easy to mount and frame, and the are super cool!
I think some of the repros look pretty authentic!
Another idea would be to frame a set of 12 charming plates- I'd love the combination of the shapes!

  22. Give the space uniformity. Use the same frames, even if the sizes and images within are the different. Also make the top line of the frames the same all the way along, and hang them fairly high, (above shoulder), otherwise they'll get knocked everytime someone passes through. Vide:
